Omega General Help / How fast
« on: 08 September 2018, 19:10:48 »
malcy-p's post on his "flat" engine brought up rev numbers at which the rams open.On my commute due to speed limits/weight of traffic the highest mine-3L auto-gets is a nudge over 2,000rpm[accelerating from a standstill and keeping up with other traffic]while most of the time it's circa 1,500rpm.The last time I had it to 70mph[a long long time ago for a variety of reasons]it was-from memory-running at something below 3,000revs,so how fast do you need to be going for these things to operate?

General Car Chat / Eye test
« on: 04 September 2018, 19:36:15 »
Yesterday some areas of the country[I think they said 9 areas but didn't specify where]began trials of roadside eye tests which if they prove successful are then mooted to be rolled out country wide. The idea is vehicles are randomly chosen and stopped if the driver can't read a number plate at the prescribed distance then their licence is suspended on the spot with immediate effect so they can no longer continue their journey unless of course there's another authorised driver in the vehicle[and who can presumably pass the eyesight test]Given the shortage of police for other duties I wonder how successful such tests can be?unless Vosa[as far as I know the only other agency with the powers to stop vehicles?]are to do this but have they the power to suspend a licence?

General Car Chat / Transit
« on: 30 August 2018, 20:23:23 »
Seen one of the VR46 editions of this today.Seems to me you get a Transit MS-RT[that's even embossed into the rear bumper]with a few small VR46 decals in yellow on it.Then there's a yellow bit on the steering wheel rim and a different pattern on the seat facings[to the ones in the MS-RT]and that seems to be it-Oh you get a [probably official merchandise]VR46 baseball cap too ;D This then adds about £6K to the price of the van taking it to the region of £40K-plus vat :o :o

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Radio behaviour
« on: 27 August 2018, 13:35:14 »
The CCR2006 in my Elite is kaput,it won't recognise that there are any CDs in it and although the radio itself plays it seems to pick at random the volume it's playing at :o Given this I've got it turned off so the date shows on the display, however every 3rd or 4th time I start the car it displays SAFE because the radio has for some reason decided to turn itself on.This is mildly annoying, but my main worry is that it might decide to turn itself on while the car is parked and flatten the battery, any ideas why it would do this?I'd take it out and sling it but that'd leave an unsightly[and annoying]hole in the fascia.

General Car Chat / DB5
« on: 22 August 2018, 08:05:38 »
It seems Aston Martin are to produce 25 "James Bond" DB5s complete with some-unspecified which-of the gadgets the film car had. It'll have a 4L straight 6 with "sympathetic upgrades"to make it more reliable although apparently the cars won't be road legal ???  Must be a bargain for someone at £2.75m a pop :o

General Discussion Area / Terrorist attack?
« on: 14 August 2018, 21:30:19 »
A man drove a car into some cyclists and then one of the barriers[erected to prevent such an attack]last I heard 5 cyclists had been injured. The man-who is from the midlands- has been arrested and is not co-operating with the police although they've said it was a terrorist attack.A bit of information given out by the authorities[what it's got to do with anything is beyond me]is that the car was registered in Nottingham and has had several owners ??? ???

A man-unnamed-in Karlsruhe,Germany was rescued by police after phoning them to say he was being chased along the street by...…………… a baby squirrel :o When the police arrived the "offender"  gave itself up by laying down and promptly going to sleep :D The squirrel, named Karl-Friedrich by police is now at an animal sanctuary being cared for :y

« on: 07 August 2018, 20:12:02 »
I'm proving very popular of late for receiving these :y Not long ago I got an invitation to attend my GPs surgery for a free health check.Soon after I was invited to apply for my state pension and today I've been invited to attend my GPs surgery again for an ultrasound scan to check for abdominal aortic aneurism  :D You never know one of these days I might actually get an invitation to a party :o They'd have to be desparate for someone to attend it though ;D ;D

Omega General Help / Radiator fans
« on: 05 August 2018, 20:47:58 »
Had the Omega running while I cleaned the garage floor, after a while the rear fan kicked in and lowered temp and then kicked out again[just as it should I believe]the front fans didn't start so I set the heater control to auto and both temp settings to lo and the front fans still didn't fire up.Question is should they have done so? Or if the gas is low/empty would they not start up?Air coming out of interior vents was colder than outside air but not cold cold.

General Discussion Area / Bluebird
« on: 04 August 2018, 14:06:52 »
This may already have happened as I'm not sure of the timing but Bluebird is due to be put back on the water today after a fantastic restoration[with the family blessing]all these years after she flipped over and went to the bottom of Coniston Water-I still recall seeing the footage of that when it happened.had I known earlier in the week about this I'd have shut up shop for the morning and gone up there to see this.

General Car Chat / Breakdown advice
« on: 28 July 2018, 21:33:07 »
A spokesperson for Green Flag was on TV yesterday giving out their advice on how to avoid breaking down in the hot weather. She began by saying you should check coolant level, oil level and tyre pressures before starting your journey[shouldn't you do that anyway regardless of weather conditions?]and then she said you should open the car windows to maintain airflow through the car and turn off the aircon to save the strain on the engine operating in the heat :o :o
