The sender plugs into the underside of the cap and exots out of thee top in the flat black connector 

I know how it's meant to be 

oh I see ,it's the black plug far right of the pic ,
i thought someone had run a separate 2 cores/wires direct to the sender, bypassing  the 4 pin plug ,routed into the gasket instead , my bad

I think there are 2 multiplugs side by side on the underside of the 'lid'

Two wires going to each. The two wires that are stripped are connected to the basket.

I am financially 'robust' so don't need to be doing this, but like to fix things where and when I can. Perhaps I'm just weird.

It looks like there's a single tab top and centre of the sender 'unit'... It isn't clear as the camera is looking straight down at it... Hold this towards the centre of the swirl pot and the sender should simply slide up

Access into the rank to see what's what isn't great, but at least you aren't trying to do it from underneath
