Omega General Help / Re: Slack Steering Box?
« on: 03 June 2008, 14:24:13 »
As has been said, they do have what appears to be excessive play in them when engine stopped as compared to a vehicle with a steering rack, play is even more evident if you turn your steering wheel off centre and also you may notice that with engine running at idle and the steering wheel off centre the play will also be evident, but at centre position and engine running the play should be minimal, this is normal for steering boxes of this recirculating ball type of which these are; however a worn steering idler can exaggerate the play somewhat so would be worth checking for excess lateral movement on that also.

just check the rubber seal around the windscreen as the new ones  they fit are often smaller in width and can look crap.

Omega General Help / Re: Tech 2 Reader can I buy one?
« on: 28 March 2008, 19:23:50 »
If it's of any interest, www.talktomycar.co.uk sell the ELM 327 with either USB or Serial version for laptop connection, bought one of them when I had my 2.2 Omega, worth it's weight in gold and can be used on other OBDII version vehicles.

As said check fuses; have you had any of the panel apart recently as a connector may have become dislodged

Omega General Help / Re: steering play
« on: 11 February 2008, 14:06:32 »
There is a lock-nut and screw on the top of the steering box itself, you'll need to loosen the locknut first and then tighten the screw down a very small amount (e.g 1/8'') at a time making sure that the steering wheel is in the straight ahead position, don't attempt to tighten this screw right down otherwise damage will occur inside the box, as said just a bit at a time so as to just remove excess play in the steering, incidently have you made sure nothing else is causing your problem i.e Steering idler , track rod ends etc?

Omega General Help / Re: Which Tech 2 ??
« on: 01 February 2008, 21:05:34 »

The elm 327 I bought from them (talktomycar) works fine with USB on laptop , all I can say is that regarding reading the Transmission;  a software package from www.gendan.co.uk called vauxcheck will soon have the capability of reading transmission as last time i spoke with them, they were working on it. I do believe the Elmscan 5 is a brand of the 327.

Omega General Help / Re: Shaking steering when breaking
« on: 06 February 2008, 20:01:59 »
My money is on wishbones (common problem on these cars), especially as I  noticed you mention turning off the roundabout, what you could try doing is when at say 60mph on motorway move steering wheel from left to right slowly and by a small, say an inch either side and see if the steering shakes by any amount, if so it's going to be most likely a shot bush/bushes in wishbones and at the very least steering linkage  :y

Omega General Help / Omega's gone
« on: 10 January 2008, 13:42:53 »
Well Guys, the Omega has gone and replaced with a 2005 Ford Focus, not quite as refined as the Omega!! but at least can drive with a bit of peace now with no braking, steering, tramling issues and generally fighting with the car! Just wanted to say thanks to all that helped with any issues i had etc, but will still be looking in, in order to assist others if possible.
Good luck to you all :y
