Where is my water going?
« on: 04 May 2008, 13:42:09 »

Hi all,
I've recently resurrected my old 1998 2.5 V6 after a couple of months standing and given it to my daughter to use. Its been back on the road again now for a few weeks and it seems to be using water. It had a new oil cooler fitted 18 months ago which included a good flushing. I have just spent some time on it trying to find any evidence of a leak but could not find one, so i turned my attentions to the classic signs of head gasket, but none obvious.
The only thing suggesting something is wrong is the temperature is a little high but nothing serious, and fairly rapid use of water, to the point of air locks if left too long. The fans all cut in and out as normal.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

The first place I would look is the Heater Bypass Valve.

I had that replaced about three years ago and I know the syptoms are quite severe. To be honest there is no leakage from that area looking at it from all angles.

Troublesome areas are
HBV
Reservoir or Cap
Coolant Bridge Dowty Washers
Leaking Oil Cooler Plate
Thermostat Housing
Transferpipe

I'm just really confused, is the water dissapearing in the form of steam, because I cant see any trace of a leak?

Like alrady said check your HBV and Reservoir and the Cap..

If there is a leak with either the Dowty Washers, Oil Cooler Plate would imagine that the heat down there would evaporate the water....

If the thermostat was leaking suppose that could evaporate too but would have thought you would get some show of water down the transfer pipe... (standing at the front of the car, top right of your radiator follow the top radiator hose, it will have a clip on the opposite end that fastens the hose to a pipe... this is the transfer pipe that goes into the thermostat housing....
