Today, I are have mostly been starting my truck project today, with lots of bits being removed from the Elite Estate AKA Marvin.
Pile of bits - most of which no longer required.

..........
You've named your car :-? and named it Marvin? ;D ;D ;D
-
Nowt to do wi'me Andy.
Our lass called it Marvin cos to her, it had the brain the size of planet, and here it is, driving from one side of York to the other every day..........
When it became too unreliable for her, she said - "Do what you want with it."
I said "Truck it", she said "Go on then!"
So here we are! ;)
-
The carlton looks nice from the little bit i can see mate.

-
.......talk about being dense..............
Of course I recognise the car - you use it for your Avatar on ABS surely?
Wow, there's a car and a half - and what a colour!
Bring it to Billing , please!
Who did the seats?
......oh, and looking forward to see more of the 'Truck'
Matthew :y :y
-
Good luck with the project!
Your Carlton is outstanding! I'd love one :)
-
thanks for the kind words on the Carlton, yes it be at Billing (MOT next week permitting) and I re-trimmed the seats myself and no, I won't do any more.
So, back to the EliTruck, Ometruck, Truckega - call what you like!
Today I've measured up, hummed and harred, and come up with some cut lines.
the smal rear door windows (are the plastic like a Carlton?) will be used behind the B pillar. Main reason is so it the front seats can travel the full length rearwards, and if some recline of the seats is required, it can be done.

I'm using some of the tailgate frame, for strength and also to utilise the rear hatch with it's window - for three reasons.
First, saves faffing about trying to find or make another window fit, making a frame, etc.
Second, use what there is makes sound sense because then the interior trim can be used more efficiently.
Third, it should look kinda standard.
Gonna contemplate until getting the cutting disc out, and Tuesday/Wednesday nights should see it chopped up - the Carlton's off Monday night and I'd rather cut the omega inside in case of rain.
Anyone able to photoshop it from the pics? Feel free to have a go -I can't do that sort of thing! :-[
Anyway could all go the way of the pear, yet!
-
I agree with all the previous comments about the Carlton :y :y It looks absolutely stunning from what we can see 8-) 8-) 8-)
Forget about the Omega project; let's PLEASE see some pics of that beautiful Carlton to bring back fond memories!! :D :D :D ;) ;)

-
another top quality motor on its way ;)
I hope so Lord Sessford!
Found out that when doing this sort of work for a road going vehicle, it has to be BIVA tested and approved, but mine should pass OK.
Been on to ACE and had this as a reply:
Hi Pete, you are allowed to modify cars to a certain extent before requiring any form of additional test ( DVLA 8 points system) .
Any substantial modifications to the chassis or monococque immediately take you outside of this ,clarification below.
http://www.the-ace.org.uk/Chassis-and-Monocoque-Modification.html
A production car 'simply' modified into a pick up leaves you in limbo due to the way the regulations work.
http://www.the-ace.org.uk/BIVA-Pickup-problems.html
You ARE able to use the BIVA system only if you do a photographic history
of further work to the vehicle, ie further engine / suspension swaps.
We hope this clarifies the situation but if you need more feel free to recontact us.
cheers

well all i can say is good luck with this, look's like a lot of hard work to go yet, and will watch for updates..

Interesting project, look forward to updates.

Last of the stripping today, just rear hatch to remove, weld the doors up and get busy with the cutting disc.
Pics of how I am hoping to have the sides of the cockpit when done.

Too late - no going back now mate!! :) ;)
-
I stil don't think that silver Carlton bonnet will fit!
-
You say that..................
The Calibra Irmscher rear spoiler could end up on it yet. :o
-
I did think that was a Calibra boot spoiler but couldn't be 100%. Quite rare now.
Always liked the Courtney Calibra with the modded kit.
-
I didn't think it was possible to have more
shite stuff in a garage as me ...... but you seemed to have proved me wrong ;D ;D ;D ;)

I try Andrew, I try! ;D
One does one's best and all that..........
-
interested to know how you put the strength back in :)
-
Not a great deal of strength taken out to be honest - only the one crossmember removed (top of tailgate frame) and that's being put back.
I was going to tack-weld the rear doors in place, but had this gut feeling it wasn't necessary.
After removing the roof and tailgate frame, the rear door shut gaps were exactly the same (3.5 - 4mm) as before I'd started cutting.
Saying that, the lateral strength does need putting back - I certainly wouldn't drive it like it is!
The weirdest thing was not cutting the shell - no going back, I guess - but cutting the sunroof cartridge, which was the last thing to cut.
I dunno, it just felt kinda wrong! :-/
Bit late now though! ;)
Anyhow, the REAL work starts later today!

You are a brave man to tackle this. Fair play to you. I work in the engineering department of a well known car factory and when a soft top version of car is developed the inner sills require extra strength.
You obviously know your stuff so I wish you all the best on this project. :y

Bloody ell Pete, Jo was'nt been sarcastic when she said "do as ....." was she? lol
good luck with it

Ta - but it's got a nice scratch on the bonnet and a chip in the front bumper now - aah well, it's only a car! ::)
Just a bump cos Darth wanted to see the pics of the truck project.
-
Spent a little more time on it today, about 5 hours, and it looks like I've done nowt!
So, after welding up the doors, I made up a cardboard template of the rear door handle hole and copied it on to some of the roof steel that I'd chopped off. Tacked in and welded up.
(Obviously did this on both sides!)
Then I removed the load cover mounting brackets using a re-ground drill bit for drilling out spot welds
(http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a196/Pedropix/DSCF0027.jpg)
Then on to removing the join that the rear side windows sit against.....
Welded the two sides together - adding some strength, as these were only spot welded to that bit I removed earlier, also welded the holes up from earlier too.....
this joint took the best part of two hours on it's own - five minutes to remove the edge, hour to weld up and the rest on grinding, finding a hole, welding it up grinding, finding another hole.....you get the picture! This was because the steel is so thin on the "quarter panel" as I'd cut it off on a fold.
That's enough for today, other side joint to do tomorrow, then I'll feel confident in moving it to get the camping gear out of the garage ready for Billing.......if only I could get the truck finished for billing this year!
Aah well, maybe next year.
-
A great thread on a fascinating project Ped 8-) I'll certainly follow this with much interest - very impressive indeed. :y :y
-
I'm impressed :y
-
Other side welded up tonight, but ran out of grinding discs to finish that part of the job - don't you hate it when that happens?
Hopefuly, this weekend will see the rear window frame cut, shut and fitted..............
Anyone got a pair of door hinges (all four bits) from a scrapper going?
Doesn't really have to be Omega doors................

Blimey - been in the garage again today - this is what happened................

Whilst some say there's no need to disconnect the ECU and earth cables, I say better safe than sorry - cos I've fried an ECU before.

Thanks for the encouragement guys.
Will reconvene in a few weeks, got a bit on until then.
so far so good bud......what technical knowlege you gone into this project with? :y
Built a few trucks, did a 'proper' 4 year apprenticeship in fabrication, fitting and welding, worked on trailers, road tankers from building them to R&D, to destructive testing, then in BTCC, WRC and general motorsport from shell prep to full builds with DCRS, and then in building race/hospitality trailers for the likes of McClaren, Toyota and Jordan F1, Ford Subaru and ralliArt WRC, Foggy WSB blah blah .......... so plenty of experience of what might/might not work. :y
Also, anyone else considering a project like this could do worse than contacting The Ace:

Fair comment. But, just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean that you actually SHOULD.
Not my cup of tea at all. If I want a faster car, I buy a faster car. If I want a pick up, I buy a Van because it always rains. ;)

yes it does! :y lol ;D
-
I like the fact that people will do a project with these cars.
The pickups look good, there are 2 being constructed AFAIR.
There are the 2.2 and 2.0 Turbo ones, the old Omegatoy Lotus.
All worth having.

I never had the opportunity to 'get to know you' before you took your ball in last time. But it seems to me that judging by a few of your recent posts you might want to take your ball in a again and leave an option for RB III as you only seem to be able to find fault in various aspects of the cars & the admins. :-X

You been watching 'Pimp my Ride' or summat?
Have at it mate, cant wait to see the finished thing!
On a more serious note, you will have removed a lot of weight from the back end-Its going to be a bit skitish in the wet,3.0L etc.
Fill the wheel well up with Lead??

There's some weight to go back in yet - probably as much as I've removed.
As far as weight distribution goes, it's all good as there will be less weight on the rear overhang. :y
It's only a 2.5 but I see yer point! That's why I kinda like Traction Control ;)
-
absolutly mighty, really loving this thread!!!! like something mad i wud do lol... keep up the good wrk, very inspiring?
-
I really enjoy seeing projects like these... To see the ideas come into realisation has to carry a good feeling about it...
I really am looking forward to seeing the pictures of the finished article...
-
Need to sell the MV6 to fund the truck project now, and it could be a long wait until owt else is done to it, so it could end up getting scrapped. :-/
Aah well..............

Don't scrap, sell, sell to me, as long as the price is right lol,

Agreed, but there's no need to call him a muppet. He wasn't abusive, he's just saying it's not his cup of tea and that he'd buy a van for practicality.
-
You know what?
Forget it.
Sorry to anyone who kinda liked this whole truck thing, but people like these two give OOF a bad name and I don't wanna get into a war of words with keyboard warriors, so I'll depart.
S'posed to be a thread about building a pick-up from an Omega, not what other people would prefer or how others perceive a post or whether I should do it. ::)
Bye all!
-
Don't let people like that put you off Pedro, there's a whole lot of us who are itching to know what you're going to do next.
Don't give it up, keep the ones who are genuinely interested, hooked :y
-
Ped I'll be tearing my hair out wondering how the project turned out :( :( - if you don't fancy continuing with the thread, put me out of my misery and PM some shots of the finished truck. 8-) 8-) :y

Second that.
Good idea, well executed so far, enthusiastic, and can't wait for the finished article.
Don't be put off, matey.

Well one of them has already thrown teddy out of the cot and left .. again .. and I'm guessing the other only "copycat" posted anyway.
Why let two miserable gits spoil your fun ??? Many more of us are following this project with a mixture of awe, admiration, and "holy shit " ......
Please keep posting :y :y :y

Thinks she loves her old car more than she does me.............

Yay! Welcome back!
Nice one Pedro, carry on.
I'm looking forward to this...
FYS.

Glad your back with us mate...You know it makes sense. :y :y :y

glad your back, looking forward to seeing the progress :y

Well one of them has already thrown teddy out of the cot and left .. again .. and I'm guessing the other only "copycat" posted anyway.
Why let two miserable gits spoil your fun ??? Many more of us are following this project with a mixture of awe, admiration, and "holy shit " ......
I know I am quietly following the thread like that. It's a shame that it required a bit of attention-whoring to get it back on track again.
You can't do a project like that without expecting a few people to air negative opinions!
-
Had a look t'other day at proportions...............

Going well, but how are you going to fill the gaps behind the side windows? :-/

Going well, but how are you going to fill the gaps behind the side windows? :-/
Thought about it long and hard, dude - three options, really.
1) Bricks and mortar followed by a fine screed
2) Big lump of sheet steel welded in and painted black
3) Clear plastic glued in with mastic.
Option 1 isn't really a serious option ;D
Option 2 is the easiest idea.
Option 3 is actually pretty difficult and time consuming to achieve, but probably the best option.
I hope so, as that's what I'll be aiming at! 8-)
-
any more progress pedro? :y :y
-
This is looking a fantastic build mate, can't wait to see it done im sure it will turn heads.
-
You are doing well Pete, may pop over and have a cuppa and a look mate :y
-
Done a little since last put pics up, but nowt to write home about. Mainly lots of 'invisible' prep work.
It's getting there, though! :y
-
Glad you haven't given up on it buddy :y
-
Glad you came back I've been following this thread with great interest can't wait to see the finished project it looks awesome, keep up the great work. wish I had the nerve and knowledge to do such a brilliant project :y
-
It's very very fantastic :y we cannot do like this because the omega caravan is not over 90 in Thailand.
I'll following project too.
-
Glad to see you haven't lost heart Pedro :y
It does look like it is going to be awesome when it's finished.
This has given me an idea,do you fancy turning my 'spares' estate into a trailer for me by using the back half ? ;D Just an idea :y

Did this for a mate a year ago, with a Carlton estate rear end and a spare tailgate.
He assured me that the spare tailgate would fit at the front (he'd cut it well in front of the B pillars).
I said that I didn't think it would be wide or deep enough - but he brought it all over anyway, then a caravan chassis for the A frame and handbrake, which did go on OK - with the help of some 3"x2"x16g steel box section.
Needless to say that the tailgate wasn't wide enough, there were gaps here there and everywhere, and he's about to chuck it in the scrapyard cos he CBA to finish it.....or another ABS member is having it for the rear quarters.
When it was full, it did tow well, and I wish he'd let me do it my way as it would have been finished and in use more often.
Aah well!

glad too see you have carried on with the project :y

OK, settled on the proportions, although I will have to incorporate some extra strength.
So today, been pattern making!

Decided that the Irmscher estate rear spoiler looks pants, so gonna use this tailgate for the cab rear and the bottom half of the original for the tailgate.
So, Elite estate spoiler is now for sale! ;D
Starting to get fed up with moving this about (can you tell what it is yet?)
Gotta get seats and carpet out now - and the seats are as forward as they'll go and now don't work - bloody GM electrics!!! >:(
Is there a manual crank???
All for now, as I need to get some angle to make some structural strength, but looks like I'll be at it again very soon. :y
-
Well done Ped - looking forward to the next round. 8-) :y
-
.......Hope you put the front bumper on - will look good on a prefacelift! I like the F/L bumper it seems bigger and better suited to the car.
Keep going Pete, keep going!
Matthew
-
Umm, the car/ute is a facelift and yes, the bumper is to go on .......one day!
:y
-
..........is it? Oh sorry, thought it was PreF/L. (Looking at the Estate bootlid - did they make 2.5 TDs F/L?)
No matter then, it's gonna look good.
Will you spray it the same Blue as the Saloon? (please, it's such a great colour?)
Matthew

That bootlid is not from the Elite - it's one that I bought as I need two. :y
It won't be Scooby WRX blue. :-X
-
Awesome build :y
-
Wawww! well done!
But, where are the pictures of the completed OMETRUCK or TRUMEGA?
Please.....
-
this mans a genius epic build :y

Very very cool. I have the very same car and have been looking at how to do it online for ages.

This is also on a site that I moderate for (www.totalcarlton.com) and it has to be said that although there are alot of things the same between Carlton (Omega A) and Omega B, the bodyshells are nothing like similar.
Floorpans may be very very similar, but as far as panels go, I think that's about it!
-
HI i always love pick ups in my home town of thailand and think that this is a fantastic project and would love it filled with sound system running very low suspension on big wheels and yellow paint, cant wait to see this project finished and painted, any chance you could weld up my rear arches when you get a minute, nice tidy welding there, cheers kack :y ;D
-
Hi Pedro,
Don't suppose you have any close up photos of how you welded up the rear doors and if you could give me any advice on how you went about doing it please.
Did you brace the door in any other way to stop it flexing when going over bumps and causing the paint to crack?.
Cheers :y
-
Left the rubbers in the doors to seal the gaps between the sills and 'door' panels, avoid any possible rattles and believe it or not, also adds a little rigidity.
I shall be welding a piece of box in to connect the B pillars to the rear strut tops, then from one side to the other, under the cabin back (old hatch door) to add further strength.
Well, that's the plan, anyhow! :y
-
excellent build and really glad you're posting again i was really disappointed when you weren't going to post the rest of the project, will you need to get this tested for an m.o.t at a testing station when complete?
-
It'll have to have a 'special' test at a VOSA (?) centre.
I have the details somewhere, but a terrible memory! :)
-
Nice 8-) :y 8-)

What every year or just initially ? :-?
As you've changed it from its original body type, will you have to have it inspected by your local DVLA and get it re-registered as a pick up ?.

Just initially, as I understand it.

Yes, could even go to being on a Q plate.
Nice and individual I guess! ;D

Anyone round the Yorkshire area got a nice little plasma cutter?
Not really looking forward to using a jigsaw to cut out the new steel! :-/
-
Would it not be cheaper to hire a plasma cutter from a tool hire company than buy one?. Or are you wanting one as your doing a bulk load of cutting?.
This link any good?

dont forget you need a compressor as well.
-
Bugger that! ;D
I just wanna borrow one for about an hour is all! :y
Obviously beer tokens would be exchanged......
-
Is it worth going to a local fabrication / engineering company, ask to speak to the shop floor manager, ask if they have a Plasma cutter and they could cut your steel for some beer money?.

It's worth it yes, but as there's no-one near to where I work (40 miles from York) and I never seem to have a weekday off...........

Well that's me fresh out of ideas then ::) .
Hope someone comes up with an idea for you or able to help you out .... good luck ;) :y
-
Hopefully you will get some demon plasma axeman sorted soon, pedro.
Looking good so far - might be better without that towbar hanging of the back though. ;) Any chance of a reply to my PM's please? :y
-
Hopefully you will get some demon plasma axeman sorted soon, pedro.
Went to get the jigsaw out today, but other issues got in the way mainly, the battery charger stopped working, so now I have the truck stuck in the garage and the Carlton stuck at the top of the drive.
Two hours later, one trip to Halfords and £53 quid lighter got me another charger.
Looking good so far - might be better without that towbar hanging of the back though. ;) Any chance of a reply to my PM's please? :y
I have dude. ;)
-
Excellent thread just read the lot of it :y
-
Nowt to report as such, but just splashed out on a compressor and air tools - let the serious fun begin!!!!! :D :D :D :y
Time for a 'Garth in the garage on Wayne's World' moment.......NOT!!! ;D ;D
-
Lots of bits of sheet steel shaped and cut today, gotta get some fold put in them then get them welded in.
Still can't get the electrics in the seats to work, so still can't get them and the carpets out. Bit of a bugger, but the climate is dead, so are the clocks and radio, although the wiring for the Bose speakers, sub and amp has been unplugged removed. :-/
Fuses all seem to be OK, even tested a few that are relevant and all fine.
Any ideas?
I really need the seats and carpets out before I start with the sparkly wand! :-/
-

Originally the car would have been supplied with a small crank handle to move the seat forward or backward in the event of the motor dying. It's a small 4 or 5 mm square drive in the motor, you could move it manually as a stop gap. :y
-
Yeah, was told that Andy, but I can't find it.
I suppose I could get small square drive (assuming it's square) and stick it in a drill, cos by hand, it takes forever! :o
-

When first seeing your work I initially thought you must have a keen interest in engineering or experience to carry out this.
From your revelation you're well qualified and was wondering what preparatiion you made eg, research, tech drawings etc.
Other oofers may be irnterested in this and if possible maybe posting it on here.
I would love to learn to do something like this, but alas I am an extremely long way from this.
Keep up the good work. :y :y
I share everyones positive comments that you continue and look forward to seeing your progress

I did an apprenticeship in thick plate working, involved on HGV trailers and road tankers, Van Diemen Formula Ford racing cars, Lotus cars, years of experience working with sheet metal, building BTCC, WTCC and WRC cars, coachbuilding for the likes of McClaren, Toyota, Subaru, Jaguar and WSB, then on to rail coachbuilding, then ending up building deep sea vehicles............ and all that helps when weighing a project like this up.
Being brutally honest, if I'd pulled my finger out, it would have been about finished by now! :-[

FINALLY!!!!!!
Got the front seats out by using an M5 tap in a drill - the square end of the tap fitted the end of the motor spot-on.:y
No point posting any pics of car without seats, safe to say there's some yucky stuff under the trims.............. :o
-
Well, it's not going any further- cost of fuel, road tax, insurance and I want to keep the Carlton going.
Sad, but head is ruling heart - which is getting to be a habit!
-
Gutted mate wanted to see this finished :'( :'( :'(. I bet it would have been a great looker due to the look of your carlton. Why not finish and then sell mate it could be worth doing it that way maybe due to the fact no one else has one. :y
-
Carlton needs some serious attention and doesn't like sitting outside!
Couldn't leave the truck outside, so it has to go. Quite happy to sell as-is to someone who wants to carry it on though.
All in the For Sale section. :y
Have to say that I'm gutted, but other things are taking up more and more of my time.
-
Wish i had your skill mate and the cash/space to finish it but sadly i'm crap at body work. ;D ;D ;D
-
Nooooo, I really wanted you to see this through :(
I can sympathise with the money situation though mate, just hope it goes to a good home :y
