x25 turbo project...

right then, the start of the turbo project :P
...
the parts list first(which i'll have to edit as i get pics and as i get the parts!

the turbo-T25 like off the LC


a recirculating dump valve-yes you do need a recirculating dump valve/wastegate when you're using an airflow sensor



a picture of a manifold the same as one i have coming (to chop up and make an adapter with for the omega manifold ;) )

right then..an update on parts...

i have so far..
a garret T25-here's another picture i can upload pointlessly to drool over!


the x25 exhaust manifold (which will end up chopped up and have a gaping hole drilled into it



the downpipe-yes...its going to get lots of abuse

and here's the bit i actually want off the saab downpipe

I wouldnt have a clue.  From the bits I have read there is a gain in power but no where near the same as a manifold mounted system.

The one thing that was mentioned and talked about in detail was the ammount of heat , or rather less heat under the bonnet.

Would be interested in Marks DTM views and theory on rear mounted turbo conversions when he has time.

I guess it will work, just not very well/efficiently . :-?

i think the rear mounted turbo issues are more.... lots of lag! and less boost pressure (because of length of distance the compressed air has to travel but not sure about the second point!)

but dont there need oil pumping round them to kep them cool
how do they go about thet wen the turbo is at the rear

i bet it sounds nice haveing a turbo right at the back

i doubt it sounds any different wether on the manifold or further down the exhaust pipe
and yes they need an oil feed but its more about the bearings than keeping it cool, some have water cooled cores(possibly all do but iv not seen everysingle turbo unit so cant say)

i wouldn't know where to start with fitting a turbo weather at the rear or on the manifold

lol from what iv had to buy so far i think it's going to be rather horrible!
it'd be alot easier if you managed to get the saab 3.0 manifold with turbo as part of the manifold, makes it alot easier than what im doing

are you putting twin turbos on your v6
will it affect the pressure in the engine resulting in blowing the head gasket

no just a single one to begin with.
aslong as you dont have too much boost pressure then the gaskets are fine

lol, my decision is going to be... "drivers side or passenger?"

atm im thinking passenger so you dont get the coolant transfer pipe round just above the manifold as i found today it was a right barstuard to get the manifold off on a spare 2.5 i have

well i need to go down armed with the saab manifold and turbo to see what angle to weld the flange onto the omega manifold :P

im thinking at the front where the cylinder 1/2 comes out and patch over the existing manifold downpipe flange by chopping it off and patching over a nice gapping hole lol!

then it's just a case of getting my tt intercooler through the post and sticking it where the second aux fan usually goes on the 3.0's and some hacking at another multiram that i have and some silicon piping later and it should be on (need to buy a manual boost controller and set it at 1 psi to start with lol)

and then i'll see how it goes :P

Hope this works for you buddy...

Regarding rear mounted turbo's - they can work quite well, but you have to keep the exhaust diameter small so you get as much pressure as possible (i.e. less lag), you also have to decat and de-silence the car (i think) so that the exhaust pressure remains high - the turbo acts as a silencer (kind of - sound awesome, I've heard!). You can run an electric oil pump and small oil cooler on a thermostat to keep the bearings in good shape. Clearly it is essential to have no air leaks on the return boost pipe, which when it is soooo long could be difficult.

The obvious gain is where you have limited space in the engine bay and also want to keep the 'bay temps down. I read a great article in PPC about a rear mount turbo on a 205 GTi which by all accounts work really well....  not huge "kick in the arse" power, more linear low pressure turbo effect - i.e. overall power gain but not the massive dump of power on boost as it were....

Anyway, don't ask any more, that is the complete limit of my knowledge! But, they do work and can be effective - its all in the design, spec and installation....

Frankly it sounds too much like hard work - I fancy a Saab 2.3 Turbo in FYS - an easy 300bhp+......

lol yep, the 2.3 turbo carlsson (9000) has 225ish as standard.
need to get this problem of having something in the cylinder bore first though.

got an audi TT intercooler come today  :y

think its only fair to warn you, the turbo places to much pressure n the bottom end of the v6 and runs the big ends!!!! this particular car did two engines, before we cottoned on to the fact that the 10.40 wasnt up to the job of protecting the engine in a turbo application, its now running sweetly and using 20/50 oil to  protect it, so far its been ok in the last 31000 miles!! before that the engines were shot at around 22k, :y

yeeees the 51 plate is mine :P
got it to unlock without the alarm going off every time now (was having to use the key before) but managed to bring a button back to life

it's slowed to a halt pretty much with me getting the 3.0 mv6 tbh - i'll get there, just probably not as quickly as anticipated as i bought two facelifts in just this month lol!

oh yeah skruntie, you should pop up and have a nosey at mi play garage (where i get to bang spanners against eachother like a caveman) - even has some proper oil spills on the floor :P

well next thing i need to do is get the 3.0 heads i got today bolted onto the x25 :P might do it tomorrow :D

also need to sort out the exhaust manifolds and especially the turbo manifold :P

i'v managed to kill my 3.0 lmao! it decided to eat it's self somehow..i found bits of metal in the plenum!

Never seen detailed pictures on Omega turbo projects, but recently i found that V6 engines are quite popular in FWD swaps here in Ukraine :)
found some info on turboed X25XE in Daewoo Lanos and X30XE in Ashra H. Both running relatively big garret ball-bearing turbos, and nice engine management :) Also i heard about X25XE 4x4 turbo Kadett, built for drag racing, but i don't have much info on that one...
i'll try to translate major info and post it here if someone interested ;)
