whenever I switch power off the handbrake applies itself & on start up procedure is start engine press hard on brake pedal to disengage handbrake, Does anyone  know what i need to do in regards releasing handbrake when i have to change rear discs or pads

Normally rear pad replacement with electric handbrake is via diagnostics to retract caliper

My Merc has an option in the dash cluster to change rear pads ..... anything similar on yours?

Most cars have a button press sequence to put the rear callipers into service mode or in one of the menus

I do like the auto hold feature when driving in traffic, also holding the car on the rear brakes is far more preferable than the fronts if the discs are hot.

'HOLD' on .my Merc uses the normal brakes  .... a double shove on the pedal engages it

I think mine has the hold function as it is a PITA to get it moving again.

Traditional foot operated parking brake though. Thank goodness

Hold is a function of the ABS module via the usual road brakes, it doesn't use the park brake (as to slow to release)

Is that the same on VW’s. I am sure I can hear rear mechanically release on my. Golf.

I like auto hold but hate electric handbrakes. You cant open your  door without the handbbrake coming on and so on. Too many interlocks. Mine went faulty and needed a new swith( which they had in stock……) 175 euros. IT is clearly exposed to the dust and dirt. Poor design hence despite selling very few DSG in Spain, the small dealer had one in stocck!

Certainly on later JLR products thats the case.  Don't think it is on many other marques that Enterprise give me...  ...on the rare occasions that they can actually be bothered to give me a car
