Title: Reduce oil use
Post by: Varche on 23 March 2022, 18:25:23
The International energy authority have suggested 10 points for reducing our use of oil.

IEA's 10-point plan to combat rising oil prices
Reduce speed limits on highways by at least 10 km/h (6mph)
Work from home up to three days a week where possible
Car-free Sundays in cities
Make use of public transport cheaper and incentivise micromobility, walking and cycling
Alternate private car access to roads in large cities
Increase car sharing and adopt practices to reduce fuel use
Promote efficient driving for freight trucks and delivery of goods
Using high-speed and night trains instead of planes where possible
Avoid business air travel where alternative options exist
Reinforce the adoption of electric and more efficient vehicles

Some interesting suggestions. 6 mph for cars might be workable. Delivery companies wouldn’t be pleased. Likewise efficient driving for freight trucks and delivery of goods. Are there any gains left to be made.?

Overall it is a good idea if there is something like 8% less available then cutting use by 8 % would help. Where is turn room thermostat down by a degree? Maybe they are all already on zero!

Do you think they will be adopted?

Does that mean I'd have to drive at 79mph instead of 85?

Can a derv Astra driver by an elderly gentleman reach 85 mph?

This seems unlikely.

Downhill, with the weight of the Werthers and whippet combo...

Certainly can, which begs the question: "If I can drive fast enough to lose my licence, why bother with anything more powerful?"  :-\

Like when you see on these motorway cop programmes, a Porsche/BMW/whatever leaving the cop cars behind. I would limit any car in this country to 100mph, even that is way above any speed limit. Except, of course, police cars.

You'll be on TB's cull list for such a suggestion :D :D

Twice a year, the "Sustainability" depatment at our Uni put out a travel census
Each time i fill it out with the same information.

I live 25 miles from work
My job is hands on so I cant work from home
The public transport(bus) takes 90 minutes each way
I do not live near a train station
The public transport(bus) does not start early enough each day for me to use
The weekend timetable for the public transport(bus) means I would not get to work for more than 2 hours
Using a bike is out of the question, see answer 1
Cant car share as 1, I do shift work, 2, no one else lives out my way
I do shift work

They still keep asking me to fill it out

As to limiting all vehicles except police vehicles to 100 mph, wash your mouth out Uncle STEMO

Mine too.
In a free society we should have the right to break the law, and should accept the consequences if we get caught.

So no Sunday driving basicaly will shut the country down.  No more Sunday shopping.  No one able to get to work.

OK so services will be exempt but staff cant get to work.

Reducing speed limit on the motorway - just means more speeding fines.

So are these intended changes going to be the same for EV drivers.

They are not intended changes, they are the ramblings of some idiot within the IEA.

Trucks are already limited and Euro6 includes eco training driver monitoring systems... So that's not news.

A 10km/h reduction would actually equate to an increase in traffic speeds as road systems are gradually being updated to add traffic lights and roundabouts to slow traffic, likewise building housing estates on the fringes of existing villages and hamlets. The A29 now has as much traffic heading south at 6am as north effectively stopping all overtaking so it has become a 35mph schlep. My 26 mile commute takes ten minutes longer than it used to, except at 3 am and only then by completely ignoring the ridiculously low limits. It was once possible to do it in 30 minutes in rush hour. :-X

Will be commuting to Heathrow at some point which will be fun, but at least I can do that journey in just over an hour. Which makes no sense as it is almost twice the distance.  ???

Unfortunately policy makers, political advisors and the like tend to listen to these people.  ::)
