General Car Chat / Re: Wrote my car off today!
« on: 08 November 2023, 08:20:04 »
A good friend towed my wreck from the olive grove to our property yesterday.

The damage is far worse than I had seen once it was removed from the tree!  Both front doors deformed. One front wheel with zero clearance to rear of wheel arch. Amazingly the engine started and would run but exhaust  broken somewhere. Gear lever in neutral but box in a gear to rear axle.

So dragged it backwards home with engine off Turning was a challenge.

Couldnt even get the bonnet open. Definitely 100% a write off.

The search for a replacement run around starts. Something like a golf . I did see a s/h UTV Can Am Maverick for sale but common sense and all that………

He is probably remembering washing machines with one or less cycles that lasted twenty or more years…..

I agree.

No harm in a peaceful protest but there is a time and a place. Nowadays it is all about maximum impact for minimal input. A downside of a free democratic society.

Ha, you haven’t googled enough!

Discarding  a trip or a tribe, there are multiple references to herd and flock.

Eg https://app.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=16-89-010#:~:text=%22Flock%22%20means%20a%20number%20of,and%20commercial%20sheep%20and%20goats.

I prefer flock only because I can legitimately call the local goat keepers goat flockers! They are actually nice people.

I got picked up on a forum for referring to a large number of wild goats I had seen and described them as a herd . No the person said. Flock of goats.

Well it turns out that it can be either. Didn’t  bother to correct her but I have taken great delight in calling neighbours who have a 100 domestic goats “ goat flockers” instead of the previous term of “goat herders”. Little things…..

I just assume these vaguaries ( is that even a word?) come as standard with all things electronic.

Internet routers, ups’s fit bits,  Nothing ever seems to work properly all of the time.

Or at least think so. The Vitara is still embedded in a tree. Lots of panel damage and front left wheel has moved back a few inches.

I stopped in an olive grove to chat with a neighbour. Got out to help with irrigation. Next thing he said “ your car”. I hadnt put the handbrake on. Duh. He had time to get in and put handbrake on but didnt. By the time I got to the door , it was really on the move downhill. I made the decision to not risk . About a hundred yards on down a slope it slammed into a tree and stopped dead.

Tuesday I have a friend with tractor coming to drag it home  half a mile. Then I can figure out what to do. Scrap yards offer 100 euros for cars delivered! Or collect for free………

I am gutted as I use it two or three times every day, including off road.

All a far cry from our day when hot topics were non sober coloured socks and cap worn wrong way round.

I do still give anyone wearing a cap wrong way round a wide berth. So far it has served me well!

Happy Birthday! 64? A mere youngster compared to some of the old gits on here.

I read something recently along the lines of “ you dont know peoples private battles, treat them kindly”  We bumped into the garage man here that fixed our 4x4 some years ago. He has been battling prostate cancer for last three years and his wife is in a wheelchair.

Hope your better half’s health improves, you can always celebrate in a few days.

Rough guess - £100 a pair. I wouldnt be surprised if it was quite a bit more than that.

Great, and alloys for scrap?

cats - depends on whether 2.5/3.0 or 2.6/3.2 - the latter are worthless.

2.5 mini facelift

I am starting downsizing.

Scrapyards here in Spain don’t offer you money for stuff but kindly recycle it for you.

I have six 16 inch Elite mini facelift wheels which might be of value here to an Omega owner.

What would a uk scrap yard pay for rims for scrap?

I definitely have two but probably 4 cats round the back of my garage. If I sawed them off the complete exhausts and brought them to the uk on next trip, what would a scrapyard pay for them?
Do UK scrapyards ask for vehicle/ individual Id etc which might make it a non starter?
