Omega General Help / Re: Windscreen replacement - what is involved?
« on: 15 December 2019, 16:48:21 »
GF is the code on all my Omegas irrespective of whether or not they have a rain sensor or CDX or Elite models.
Most cars have heat absorbing screens - heat reflective are easily identifiable as they have a blue / silver sheen to them looking from the outside like poser sunglasses, and in my opinion look terrible. I have an Elite with a reflective screen fitted, but I wouldnt have another, just from an appearance point of view.
Heat absorbing without rain sensor - 90457721
Heat absorbing with rain sensor - 24433003
Heat reflecting without rain sensor - 9146283
Heat reflecting with rain sensor - 24433002
Upper rubber moulding - 90460335
Lower rubber moulding - 9175100
The original seat (90460334) that clips around the screen is not available now (for the rubber to sit in), so the alternative part numbers are -
Upper 90493424
Lower 90460336
Right  90493426
Left    90493425

I last bought a set in early 2017 - although the RH and LH retainers were then only stocked in Germany. Your VX dealer will ge able to advise on availability now, but make sure they search out of the UK if not shown available here, as some find this 'too hard to do', or don't actually know how to search other than stock in the UK.

A screen that I bought approx 12+ years ago, came with the whole retainer / seat (90460334) already attached, but now they are supplied (assuming still available) in separate pieces.

Hope that helps.

Omega General Help / Re: Windscreen replacement - what is involved?

If you can, I would suggest getting a genuine VX screen rather than an aftermarket one. There are two types, heat absorbing and heat reflecting which has a blue tinge to it, but the code will be on the lower nearside corner.
As with most rubber seals, they can deform permanently over time, so I would fit new upper and lower seals - not sure whether they are still available from VX but you know they'll fit.
The issue I had with an aftermarket screen was that no matter how it was positioned in the aperture, it sat high in one corner as the profile of the glass wasn't 100%, which in turn results in the upper rubber sitting high leaving a gap between the body and seal.
It all depends on whether the windscreen company can supply them and / or VX still show them as available. Plus how good the fitter is!

Omega General Help / Re: Exhaust
« on: 04 December 2019, 01:55:26 »
I've got 2 x 3.2's and 1 x 2.6, and I'm sure they all have a 'gasket' between the down pipes and the centre pipes. The down pipes have a welded threaded oval shaped fixed clamp which is usually the issue when trying to remove the bolts as they can shear off in it. Next to this clamp is a tapered metal woven gasket that sits on the end of the pipe on which the flared end of the centre pipe mates to. This woven gasket looks like it is part of the downpipe as it is a tight fit. The two pipes are secured by the two bolts that pass through the loose oval shaped clamp bolting into the fixed clamp on the downpipes.
If you think the bolts are going to shear, you can cut a very thin slot across the clamp through to the bolt, which will release the tension on it and aid its removal. Alternatively some heat will help.
Bear in mind that if you get a 2.5 or 3.0 litre rear box (some suppliers will say that they are cheaper and will fit ok), but the exit pipes are shorter than the 2.6 and 3.2, and will result in exhaust deposits discolouring the bumper above the exhaust pipes, so I would suggest you try to get the correct ones for your car.

Omega General Help / Re: Very simple Q - wiper blade arms
« on: 21 November 2019, 18:28:45 »
I can only check a facelift car, but I wouldn't think the earlier cars are any different - the arm with the greater curve from the spindle is the drivers / offside. The passenger / nearside arm is the straighter of the two.

General Car Chat / Re: GARAGE OF DREAMS

My wife doesn't like Caravans, especially black ones. According to her, it's funeral car  ;D ;D ;D
A friend of ours (nickname Bradock) had a black Suprema with the "Funeral Service" logo on the back and carried a coffin (empty) at club meetings. The unsuspecting were scared ;D ;D ;D
Unfortunately his "funeral" Suprema was destroyed in an accident.

All women must think the same in their own bizarre way - my wife has no appreciation for any of my Omegas, and she too says my black 3.2 Elite estate is like a hearse.......

Omega General Help / Re: Problem after problem after...
« on: 18 November 2019, 09:33:08 »
I think I'd be looking elsewhere than the battery - engine dying after 30 secs of driving, and to restart immediately suggests the fault lies somewhere else....

Last battery I bought for one of my Omegas (2.6 Elite) was a Yuasa about 4 years ago - been great and has never let me down. For the extra few quid to buy a battery with a good warranty period makes sense to me - as long as you keep the receipt and it is from a supplier that you can physically return it to in the event of a problem under warranty.

As I have suggested previously, its not worth faffing about repairing your old one. I would strip the door down sufficiently to gain access to it easily away from home, go to you local scrappy, buy one for a fiver, test it on your car outside the yard, if faulty go back in before the marker pen blob dries and get another, if it works, drive home happy.
All the ones I have got to date from my local scrappy have worked a treat......
For the sake of a fiver........

IIRC what I read on here its to do with calibration of the fuel gauge.

Steve
Zactly ;) tanks are different size and shape :y

I'm going to disagree  :) - purely because the fuel gauge is the same part number across the range irrespective of engine size and body type. Therefore as with most cars, surely it's more to do with the source of the information i.e. a fuel gauge sender unit that reads the level of fuel relative to the tank capacity and sends the info to the gauge....
But I will stand corrected.....

Omega General Help / Re: Battery losing charge
« on: 13 November 2019, 21:23:06 »
Although many new batteries come partially charged, it is always a good idea to fully charge a new battery before use - preferably with a 'smart' charger rather than a standard charger. When a battery is very low, it isn't a good idea to use the alternator effectively as a charger; they should be charged to capacity using a smart charger, and when fully charged the alternator can take over when in use on the car.
Every Omega I have owned always seemed to have a greater than normal battery drain when not in use. By this I means periods of several weeks. There never seems to be any fault with them; it just seems to be a characteristic that the battery needs regular 'top ups' when not in regular use.

Omega General Help / Re: Starter motor
« on: 09 November 2019, 08:02:32 »
I've done two relatively recently due to faulty solenoids - in both cases, I found it far easier to gain access to the starter motor mounting bolts ( to then to remove it from the engine) by undoing the three bolts for the alloy engine mounting bracket and removing it with the engine supported under the sump on a trolley jack.

Had it not sold, the likelihood is that it would have been relisted for a sale on another date. It hasn't been relisted, so I can only presume it sold on the day.
The only question is whether an OOFer bought it.....
