General Car Chat / Oh well I’ve started now...

After months of deliberating (on & off) and given the extra time most of us have on our hands now, I thought I’d replace the headgaskets on my Pre facelift Omega MV6 as O/S 1st cylinder compression all gone. Plus I’ll replace thermostat/housing/water pump/ cam belt / good service

Got as far as stripping engine to a point where I can remove the “trumpets”

If I knew how to add photos I’d post a few 😄

Stay safe everyone 👍👍

Meant to ask - I’ll need new head bolts?

Many thanks for the info.

I’ll stock up on my tools and parts then hit the ground running so to speak

Regards

Rob

Omega General Help / Head gasket, transfer pipes & thermostat
« on: 05 April 2020, 21:09:18 »
Ok my 3.0 MV6 (pre facelift 1999) has been sat in my drive long enough.

It’s done 113k, but will need recommissioning all round + tyres (4) + exhaust+brake discs/pads and then a good service. That’s what I know anyway subject to MOT.

Defo failed headgasket at front cylinder on the left bank as very low compression compared to others.

Think with this spare time I have presently I’m thinking of giving it a go myself to fix. The car maybe not be cost effective to do on face of it but they’re getting quite rare now and far too good to break/scrap.

I’ve done some research and will sort out a torque wrench and torx set sockets etc.

Question - is there any recommended particular part suppliers for the gasket sets, transfer pipes, water pump  thermostat & housing. I’ll also replace the cam belt & tensioner. ?

Wanted good quality ones as don’t want to do it all again in couple of years.

Thanks in advance

Well you could have it collected and bought down to you.

I used Falkirk Car Carriers to bring my pfl MV6 back from Glasgow for £195 + vat. I’m in East Yorkshire.

Costs no more than a full tank of fuel and a your time away

If it’s good 👍, if it’s not so good you can sell it on and not really have wasted your time and most of the costs going yourself

A shame? A 20 year old rust bucket being broken for spares.  :-\

Doesn’t look that rusty to me !

It’ll be a good stablemate for my star silver MV6.

That’s only had 1 previous owner other than the dealer as a pre-reg in Dec ‘99.

It’s twice the mileage at 113k, but that has full spec including leather, nav, cruise, Bose, telephone head unit so again worth keeping & sorting.

It’s off road at moment with my poss head gasket issues.

I’m going to restore it as I remember it when it was 9 months old.

I’ve got pics from when I had it before so got really good base to work with.

Needs rear arches doing, 2 door bottoms, and wheels re-finishing for looks.

I’ll replace a couple of bits of interior trim too.

It’ll need 4 brake discs & pads /centre exhaust piece/handbrake for MOT (at least)

Certainly worth doing and keeping nice with that mileage / low owners / documentation history

Always remember the day I collected it from the dealers in 2000 😄

Well finally tracked it down and bought it back after a little haggling.

I always regretted selling my Champagne/leather S Reg MV6 in 2001 due to house purchase at the time. The first owner was Vauxhall.

I sold it with 11k miles on the clock. It ended up in Glasgow (I’m in East Yorkshire).

I bought it from the guy bought it from the Vauxhall dealer I sold it to! So other than Vauxhall, only him and me as owners.

It’s only got 56k miles on with all MOTs//receipts etc including the two Vauxhall dealer sales invoices.

Needs some tlc as been laid up a while.

Get some pics up soon😉

General Car Chat / Chassis numbers PFL Omegas
« on: 17 August 2018, 21:19:15 »
Does anyone have any VIN number data as to what might be towards the last of the PFL Omegas?

Just that I was told that my MV6, having every bit of spec, was towards the last RHD off the line ??

Just be interested if this was the case but without the VIN data it’s a bit of guess work

Thanks in advance
