General Discussion Area / Oven Chips

I'd never thought about oven chips until recently and usually just grabbed the cheapest supermarket own brand, until I ran out and bought a bag of McCains from a Spar shop.  Expensive, but far and away better than the own brands I usually buy.  :y

I'm currently wading through a big bag from The Hearty Food Company which cost 90p in Tesco.  Not bad, but a bit greasy.  ::) 

The same size bag of McCains oven chips were somewhere between £2 -£3!  :o  When the chips were down, I couldn't bring myself to splash out....  :-[  ;D

So what are your favourite oven chips?  ???

So Corbyn claims today to have obtained documentary evidence that the UK and US governments have been discussing access to the NHS for American healthcare companies as part of any FTA.   ::)  I don't understand why this provokes such hysteria.  :-\  If the NHS puts a contract out to tender, why shouldn't US companies have the opportunity to bid if other international companies have the option?  Surely it will be against WTO rules to discriminate against companies from the US, whether we have an FTA or not and whether we are in the EU or not?  :-\

The way I see it, there is a lot of medical expertise in the US and we regularly see people raising cash to send sick kids there for treatment.  Surely the NHS could benefit from this expertise? The hysteria seems completely irrational to me...  :-\

Meanwhile Michel Barnier has reportedly told a group of MEP's that free movement of people will have to accompany free movement of goods in any EU-UK trade deal and it will be impossible to conclude a deal by the end of 2020.  ::)

I think she gets an easy ride in the media especially by the BBC, but he had her rattled.  Especially over her plans for a currency for Indy Scotland, the deficit and plans for EU membership.  Worth watching on iplayer if you didn't see it.  :y

Tomorrow he interrogates Comrade Corbyn!  :)

Today Boris has announced that plans to reduce Corporation Tax from 19% to 17% have been shelved.

I wonder if this is because he plans to sign up to the EU's demands for a 'level playing field' in the forthcoming trade talks to make it easier to clinch the deal by the end of next year?  ???  :-\  ::)

My 25 year old Potterton Profile keeps cutting out.  :'(

It starts up OK and runs for a while, but then shuts down for a while before starting up again.  Sort cycling I believe is the technical term.  :)

All the radiators get hot when it's running, it kettles slightly but just a mild hiss, and the thermostat appears to work.  :-\

It was running fine until Friday night when I got home after a few days away and the house was a chilly 12 degrees, so I whacked the power up to max from 3 and  all seemed well.  Ever since though...  :(  If I have it on 3 it doesn't warm the house very well at all, on Max it's OKish, but it's not right!  ::)

It's chewed a few PCB's over the years, so maybe it's time for it's next one?  ???  ::)

Fracking in England has been suspended indefinitely by the government due to the inability to predict earthquakes.   :-\

So is this a good thing? Bad thing?  Or just a stunt to try and 'green wash' the Tories before the election?  Note it is not a permanent ban.  ;)

While we are consumed with election fever, the Russians have sent 10 submarines into the North Atlantic and have also tested an intercontinental ballistic missile, which they fired from a submarine in the White Sea off of Archangel to it's target thousands of kilometres away on the Kamchatka Peninsular in the far east of the country.  A stones throw from Alaska incidentally...   :-X

Maybe these submarines are sat out here in the North Atlantic so the sailors can catch up with their social media accounts for the next few weeks?  ;)

So it appears that under Boris's version of the EU's terms of withdrawal treaty, Northern Ireland will align with the Republic of Ireland's VAT rates which is 23%, but more significantly the reduced rate for energy is 13.5% as opposed to the UK's 5%. The result will be considerable price hikes for the people of Northern Ireland.  ::)

At first glance I thought WTF are they thinking?  :o  But now I'm wondering if it's a Johnson/Cummings cunning plan to get Northern Ireland to reject the plan under the 'consent' principle and take us further down the road to a clean break BREXIT, albeit later than 31st October.   :-\  It would also lay bare the cost of Irish unification to the people of NI?  ???

But one things for sure, despite all the rhetoric about them digging up the semtex because a few lorries might get stopped and checked here and there, Boris doesn't seem too worried about pissing off the Unionist communities, by making Northern Ireland a semi-detached part of the UK?  ::)  :-\
