General Discussion Area / Internet Providers
« on: 13 August 2018, 23:31:34 »
Many years ago I signed up with Nildram for broadband, email and some space for a website.

After a few years Nildram got taken over by Tiscali. The new owners didn't manage to break my internet and I didn't want to lose my email address or the web space so I stuck with them.

After a few years Tiscali got taken over by TalkTalk. The new owners didn't manage to break my internet and I didn't want to lose my email address or the web space so I stuck with them.

Until last month that is when TalkTalk turned off my web space. >:(

Not sure which way to jump now. There were two things that had me hanging on to a ridiculously slow connection at an inflated price - an email address and a  web space address that I have been using for 15 years. Now the web address has gone it is just the email address that I am clinging on to. I will be switching to a new provider as soon as I can.

Thinking of going with Zen this time.

I don't really want to bother with registering my own domain  :-\ but I think I will have to if I want to be able to switch provider and have some control over my email and web space.

General Car Chat / waiting for AA recovery
« on: 15 April 2018, 20:50:15 »
Sat on hard shoulder of M25 just past the M23

First AA van has been out and agreed that it is probably the water pump on SWMBO'S Galaxy tdi

How long do you think it will be before the lorry comes to scoop us up?

How long to get back to Cornwall?

And will it make any difference that we have a 2 year old and a 3 year old asleep in the back?

General Car Chat / Ford Galaxy - cable window regulator
« on: 10 February 2018, 22:45:52 »
Poxy things. A while ago I fitted new cables and drive pulley to the mechanism in SWMBO's 2002 Ford Galaxy.

Yesterday it self-destructed again, leaving the drivers window fully open. I had to go out in the dark and pull the door card off so I could cut some pieces of wood to length to hold the glass up in the closed position.

Looking back through ebay correspondence it is almost 2 years to the day since I bought the last repair kit >:(

I was just about to book the thing in for an MOT but I have a nagging doubt that it might fail if the drivers window cannot be opened  :-\ Last time it happened it was a royal pain in the arse operating barriers on multi-storey car parks >:(

This time I will buy a kit including new runners etc assembled and ready to fit (not fit new cables to the old runners).

Does anyone have any experience of Shalahambra (Sharan/Galaxy/Alhambra) window regulators? can anyone recommend a particular make for the replacement?

Genuine appear to cost about £105, pattern £25-£30. If they are all the same crap design as the VAG original then I don't see any point in buying anything but the cheapest......

Omega General Help / Fitting poly bushes to front wishbones
« on: 17 January 2018, 22:29:51 »
Last time I fitted poly bushes (to my Elite) I changed the rear bushes and balljoints as well so I removed the wishbones from the car first.

I think I have seen reports of front bush replacement being possible with the wishbone still attached to the car.  :-\

Is my memory playing tricks? and if it is possible is it actually a method that one would choose to repeat ?

General Discussion Area / Smartphone screen replacement
« on: 15 January 2018, 22:42:51 »
I finally managed to crack the glass screen on my Samsung Galaxy S5 when it fell out of my pocket and landed on a tiled floor :'(

Has anyone here got any experience of fitting a replacement glass? It still works fine so I imagine it just needs a new glass (and not the much more expensive screen and touch sensor)

The process appears to be similar to (in principle) to repairing an Omega headlamp (eg warm it up enough to soften the glue and allow the front to be prised off)

Plan B is to do nothing seeing as it still works.................

Omega General Help / Rear subframe bushes - where to buy?
« on: 13 January 2018, 22:44:14 »
The ProjectMV6 is in dire need of new doughnut bushes on the rear subframe.

Has anyone bought any recently? Any makes to avoid?

I think I bought Genuine VX last time I bought some for my Elite :-\

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / Wanted - headlamp washer pump
« on: 24 November 2017, 10:22:18 »
For the project MV6

It is a 2003 facelift estate (but I suspect that a pump from any year/model would fit)

The GM part number on the  faulty pump is 90 508 709

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Interior lighting wierdness
« on: 11 November 2017, 16:17:32 »
After 7 weeks away I opened the project MV6 rear drivers side door to refit a child seat.

When I closed the door the interior light stayed on and  nothing I do will turn it off now.

I have disconnected the battery for now.

Any ideas anyone?

General Discussion Area / Ooops - server hard drive failing

I have been running a little home server using an HP microserver with 3 hard disks set up in a RAID array with two disks mirroring each other and one hot spare. I cannot remember how long ago I put it together  :-[ it is looking very dusty so probably several years  ::)

I normally switch it on in the morning and walk away but this morning I watched it start up and noticed an error at start up on one of the disks.

It appears that the software RAID has done it's job and switched from using the failing disk and is now using the spare.

my problem now is that I want to replace the failing disk with something equivalent and I haven't been paying attention to who owns which HDD manufacturers and which manufacturers to steer clear of.

I don't even know if I can still buy a 250GB SATA disk.  :-\

General Car Chat / Jump Leads
« on: 30 June 2017, 22:21:41 »
Melted >:(

I have had them for years but never really needed them to carry any serious current.

My old Range Rover had been sat for 3 years. I charged the battery a couple of weeks ago and it started and ran fine. Today I needed to start it to load it onto a trailer and the battery was FUBAR.

I tried jumping from a slave battery and also from SWMBO's Galaxy with the engine running. All I managed to do was melt the useless POS jump leads :(

Any recommendations for decent jump leads?

Omega General Help / Facelift wiring diagrams - TIS?
« on: 28 February 2017, 13:40:37 »
Am I correct in thinking that the only way of getting up to date (or up to 2003 at least ::)) wiring diagrams for a facelift Omega is to get hold of a TIS DVD and install it on an old 32 bit windows PC?

(I think that might be three separate questions :-\)

As above. The radio in the Project MV6 picks up the channels preset by Rog fine (apart from the Welsh ones....) but the auto tune fails to find any working stations at all, it just keeps going round and round.

I can't find any reference to this in the users manual but I have this notion that FM in Europe uses a different size step between transmission frequency to FM in the US.

A consequence of this would be that a radio configured for auto tune in one area would be rubbish at finding stations in the other area.

1. Am I halfway correct in this?
2. Does the CCR2006 have a way of switching between US and European frequency steps?
