....

I think it is a pump that is used on many vehicles that have auxiliary (diesel burning) heaters. IIRC SWMBOs diesel Galaxy had one which I replaced in a futile attempt to get cabin heat on journeys of less than 100miles. ...
That's a different thing. As GK says, the extra pump under the header tank is so you can run your heater with the engine off. My Omega never had this pump in the first place.
My R Class had the same set up & I used it about twice in 4 or 5 years so I doubt GK will miss is it if it doesn't work.
My point is that it is a generic pump and easily obtainable

Does it leak?

Why go to the trouble of removing it if it isn't causing any harm?

One person in the picture is clearly photoshopped 7:24 into the video. It looks like one of those prop photos you see on telly box where the picture is altered to look like the actor, but they haven't quite got the angle or lighting right
He never looked right to me - maybe it's the spray tan?

In an alternative universe the EVs are plugged into home chargers whenever they are not being driven.

The home/car owner uses their smart electricity meter to play the electricity markets by charging when the electricity is cheap and feeding into the grid when prices rise.
That leftie thinking is great, but what happens when you go to use the car and find out there's no sparkles left because you sold it all back to the grid ;D

Joking aside, you know this is when a parent/child gets rushed to hospital, or you oversleep because the bedside alarm didn't reset following the forced power cut.
Many people on this forum are here because they don't buy into the 'take it to the dealer a don't ask questions ' ethos.
Tesla & Apple both follow the 'pay up and don't bother your pretty little head with stuff you don't understand ' approach which is why I won't own one unless/until they open up and give the user control (& right to repair). I wouldn't characterise Tesla or Apple as left wing BTW.
For the EV owners to buy into automatic peak lopping the providers are going to have to give the owners the controls they need. Eg by setting a minimum amount of charge to leave in the battery at all times and by setting some economic criteria (charge below x pence per unit, discharge above y pence per unit)

Maybe they will temporarily shut down household applies to charge vehicles 👀
Anyone else see the flaw* in that plan?

*By flaw, I mean gaping chasm of unintended consequence that would swallow an electric trolleybus.
Maybe the car owners could be paid to feed electricity into the grid.

there is an access panel in the boot to get to the fuel pump
which shouldn't be obstructed by the towbar bracketry.

The towbar I fitted certainly didn't go across the access panel.

EML is on because someone unplugged the MAF....

I think that the ECU goes into limp home mode when the MAF is unplugged and runs on 'factory' settings which clears the learned fuel trims.

Does your fuel pressure gauge have a flexi hose? Can you refit the plenum with the fuel gauge attached and lying on the cam-cover?

when the thing stalls - the instantaneous fuel consumption reading climbs (from 0.5 gal / h at normal idle to 1.2 gal / h as it stalls) - so looks like the system is trying to deliver more fuel under these circumstances - though I wonder if this is just a calculated value based on assumed pressure and time injectors are open for?
I think you are correct.
The symptoms are similar to that of a blocked fuel tank breather. Thing is that the pump should be strong enough to collapse the tank if the breather is blocked (or miss connected).

So - a case of 1 step forward - about 6 steps back..

Reset codes with tool which eventually arrived today and car is now back to the state it was when I started it for the first time after 7 years. Starts, and then splutters to a stop after about 10 seconds. Was running fine prior to the reset (though indicating a bit fuel hungry on the computer - if I believe that).

I have read that it can take a quite a lot of starts to get it running again (would this imply that some parameter in the fuel / air delivery is a long way off from nominal values). I did about 10 starts but battery is weak (it was one I had lying about), so have left on charge overnight for another crack tomorrow.

P0173 Fuel trim malfunction bank 2

The ECU has tried to correct for under (or over) fueling and reached a limit on both banks.

Given the other symptoms it does point to a fuel pressure issue.

Considering how simple and reliable the pressure regulation is, that seems unlikely to me. But it is so easy to check that I would do that first. And then move onto the more likely causes such as air leaks, exhaust faults, sensor faults, and top of the list, the air flow meter.
I wasn't suggesting the regulator was at fault (but it might be worth checking that the little rubber pipe is still connected to the correct place on the inlet manifold)

All the above checks are worth doing. A code reader that can display 'live' readings will show whether the air flow meter is giving a plausible reading.

Gearbox is buggered. Lots of slippage, smell of burning friction, thumping, and limp mode.

I suspect the solenoid change temporarily masked the problem, and that the old one was killed by whatever is falling to bits inside the box.

Car is now on my drive for an upgrade to AR35 incl new Torque Converter and if needs be, flex plate (auto version of a flywheel)

Watch this space for photos / videos and updates :y
I knew something was afoot when you asked if you could pick up the box from Joe.

Can you get me a job in CID?  ;D

Yeah sure. You can have mine  ::)

I asked for the box because Migalot texted me to say there was a funny vibration / sensation. My inner sense just detected the gearbox would be the culprit. I’ve been suspicious of it.

Thankfully I was right - and we have a free AR35, so all that’s been lost is some ATF / a solenoid :y
I am in awe of the way you work. I am also feeling guilty for tagging you and getting you involved ::)

Asking the following because I genuinely don't know the answer - has the dying box pumped debris through the cooler and the cooler hoses? if it has done so is it OK to flush them & re-use?

Just clean the selector mechanism, there's a guide.
Auto gearbox selector switch removal and cleaning
It isn't a complete guide - I grabbed the images from peoples posts when they were grappling with selector switch problems.

The first task is to check that the indicator lights on the gear selector console match the position of the lever. Clear the codes and see if any reappear.

If it is the switch at fault then you should be able to take it apart and clean/regrease it. the fun part will be getting to it  ::)

and adjusting it correctly when you refit ......
