Ship Tracking Sites
« on: 07 May 2021, 19:32:25 »

Anyone know a good ship tracking site that will give an accurate location of Royal Navy ships?  ???

One of the aircraft carriers was in Lyme Bay last night and I assumed it was HMS Queen Elizabeth, so I posted a photo on our local facebook page.  Now everyone's piling in on me and telling me it was HMS Prince of Wales.  ::)  ;D

I can't seem to find a tracking site that will give me the location (probably for obvious reasons) and the best I can find is that QE arrived back in Portsmouth today which would have put her in Lyme Bay last night and PoW is in the NE Atlantic on her way to Leith, which seems unlikely that they'd go round the top of Scotland unless it's part of her sea trials.  :-\

I so want to be right....  ;D

I think you've answered your own question. If you were to phone the QM of HMS Blah blah & ask if HMS Whatsit is about to arrive in the dockyard tomorrow/etc, they'll refuse to answer. Or that was certainly my experience 30 odd yrs back  ;)

Suspect you've got it arsi-tarsis. Don't do boats, but...

HMS PoW departed Pompey for sea trials last Saturday. I think that'll be the one you saw. I haven't heard that it's gone back into Pompey, but it's possible since it hasn't got any aircraft on-board and that's what I'm interested in.

HMS QE departed Pompey shortly after PoW also last Saturday. It was already embarked with 7 RN Merlin Helicopters. 4 RAF/RN F-35's and 5 USMC F35's embarked on Sunday.  Another 4 RAF/RN and 4 USMC F35's embarked on Monday. A final USMC F-35 embarked yesterday (it was busted and wasn't fixed in time for Monday). The rest of the QE carrier flotilla includes RFA Fort Victoria (with 3 RN Merlin HC4's), HMS Defender, HMS Diamond, HMS Kent, HMS Richmond (each with one RN Wildcat HMA2), RFA Tidespring,  USS The Sullivans (USN UH60), and HNLMS Evertson (Cloggie NH90). There is probably also a Hunter Killer sub in the group too - but they are hush-hush. The whole lot has been involved in exercises off the north coast of Cornwall this week.

QE is supposed to take part in a Joint Warrior exercise to the north of Scotland next week, so it's likely to be working it's way up the Irish sea this weekend.

HDMS ABSALON and HMCS HALIFAX were both in Liverpool docks until this morning. Both are carrying helicopters. RFA Tideforce was also there.

The USMC Carrier Iwo Jima is currently just off Dundee, with around 12 MV22's, 6 AV-8B's, 4 CH-53's and 2 SH-60's on board. And the Assault ship USS San Antonio with 3 AH-1Z's and 4 UH-1Y's is up there too, together with HMS Albion. San Antonio was in Plymouth docks for a week a in mid April.

There is also a very large scale 82nd airborne Para Drop just about to happen in Estonia. Around 10 USAF C-17's are just about to enter UK airspace to the north of Scotland en route to the drop zone.

Other than that - all quiet on the western front ;D

When I was taking the photos, I did wonder where the escorts were, but assumed they were over the horizon.  :-\

I thought HMS Prince of Wales was alongside in Portsmouth taking on water.  ;)  ;D

Think they got a Matlo to shove his finger in the hole. The RN twitter page had this for last Saturday

"There's a mammoth Team Portsmouth effort over 36 hours to support RN/carrier ops, starting with
 @HMSDragon
 sailing this morning [Friday] and ending with
 @HMSQNLZ
 at 3.45pm - and
 @HMSPWLS
 @hmsdiamond
 @HMSDefender
 and
 @hms_kent
 departing in between."

Don't do twitter myself, but they don't seem to mind publicising big events. If PoW is busted again then they probably won't shout it from the rooftops.

I was in Lyme yesterday evening and watched a couple of Chinooks doing circuits round it and landing on the deck.

No idea which carrier it is, though.

And a close up from sea.  :y

I've had to concede she's HMS Prince of Wales.  Bugger!  ;D

I'm that old I spent a few months on the previous HMS Kent (it was a harbour training ship at Whale Island) in 1982 because the training ship I should have been on HMS Fearless had gone to the Falklands  :o :o :o

Nicked from another site...
Quote
3 British warships currently passing the Mull of Kintyre,
 one unspecified, HMS Kent, and HMS Dragon which isn’t part of the exercise and from memory was what HMSQE used to plot as?

 HMS Defender, Argyll and Biter along with RFA Tidespring have also popped up in the area as of 0715.

 HMS Richmond, HMDS Esbern Snare and US Govt vessel 68(The Sullivan’s?) have now appeared as if 0725.

Take the names of the ships with a pinch of salt - Dragon and Argyll are both in Portsmouth at the moment. It's believed the ship plotting as Argyll is actually HMS QE.

Our school was twinned with HMS Kent. In about 1980 we went down there on a coach to play them at football. However it was pi55ing down with rain when we got there, so the competition was changed to the shooting range. What a faff - a dozen 15 year olds walking around with .22 rifles and 10 rounds of ammunition each, on a military base - what could possibly go wrong  :D

If you're interested HMS QE is back in Portsmouth, with 16 of them expensive Stealth jets up top and a few choppers.

Story is that one of the support/supply ships RFA Fort Victoria had a problem with the freezers and all the food has defrosted so QE has come back for supplies. Personally I suspect the MOD has underestimated the amount of Rum required to splice the mainbrace on a 6 month deployment, and supplies have run out after just 2 weeks.
