Whilst he's sat in the bath, and therefore unlikely to drop the laptop, I did wonder if that 330d would make a good commuter car for Mrs TB...
It would certainly be an improvement over the Zafira in every respect... Quicker, more economical, more comfortable...
I shall wait until she is in a better mood before asking her. Simply because I like BMWs more than she does, and I won't have one (M3 and M5 excepted)
As you know, I was ideally placed in my employment to compare these cars. When I had the E92's (same body as the previous M3 Coupe), we pitched E92 330d's and 335d's against a few E92 M3's and up to a ton there's very little in it. Slight advantage to the M3, albeit 0.4 of a second, off the line up to around 50mph, then the mid range torque of the straight six diesel reels back that difference. Even the guy in North Oxford BMW confirmed our findings when I told him what we'd done in the interest of science.
Most runs/sprints/challenges off the lights don't go much over these speeds, so a possible 50mpg is acceptable for the same speed without the unnecessary noise.
With a bigger intercooler and mapping to lose the electronic limiter, these cars will see over 160mph (as does the D3 Saloon), which is why a few went to Hartge before they ceased trading.
