9/11
« on: 11 September 2021, 10:16:46 »

20 years ago today I was camping in Namibia's Namib desert when someone came over and told us that a plane had hit the World Trade Centre building in New York and it had collapsed.

We listened to the BBC World Service on a crackly radio, but sitting by a campfire in a remote place amongst the magnificence of some the biggest sand dunes in the world, the enormity of what had just happened thousands of miles away completely escaped me.  It was over a week until I actually saw the footage of the collapsing towers when staying at a hostel in South Africa where they had a TV.

These days of course the Namib desert doubtless enjoys a better mobile phone signal than Brackley or Barnsley, and we would have all been glued to our phones watching events unfold in real time.

Where were you and what were you doing when you heard the news?  ???

I was at work and saw it on TV when I walked into the reception area.To begin with I thought it was some film or other that customers were watching.Took a short while to realise it was actually happening! I have an excellent book about it called 102 Minutes by Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn.

I was in an office block in central London.

Someone stood up in their cube and announced to the office that a plane had struck the world trade centre.

I didn't understand the enormity of what had happened until I got home and saw the news coverage.

I was at my parents staying for a few days. TV was on, so we got the first reports of a plane going in. Then shortly after that never ending image of the second plane going in.  I said to my old man, this is now war!  He told me not to be so silly………….. :'( :'( :'( :'(

So yes, we remember today the lost 3,000 plus many war deaths since in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the terrorist attacks in many places :'( :'( :'(

Will the cycle now be repeated with the encouraged terrorist groups based in Afghanistanand elsewhere! :o :o  Tin hat time everyone.

We were in NYC on the 10th / 11th August 2001.
Went to the top of WTC and felt a bit queasy looking down at the tiny yellow Taxis and people looked like ants walking around below.
Sat at home a month later watching the horror unfold live in complete shock. It felt like the world as we knew it was coming to an end, and in some respects it did.  :'(

Painting a window frame, happened to put the telly box on for background just before the second plane hit :'(

Suffice to say the window frame didn't get painted.

I was at home, not long out of bed after working nights. I was going into my garage, Steve Wright on the radio said something about a plane hitting a building ..... we put the telly on shortly before the 2nd plane hit. And watched the telly the rest of the afternoon
