small coming together of wing mirrors
« on: 28 September 2021, 23:27:21 »

driving home yesterday & part of my journey meant i had to drive through  village which is notorious for being a speed trap, as i was almost through the road narrows with a blind bend & at that moment a black bmw coming towards me took the bend & took my wing mirror. luckily for me the only damage was the casing which is obtainable from the dealers £33  come as a primed unit so needs painting. ebay has the from £10 but no o/s. its not worth an insurance claim & as i was going downhill i may have the bmw,s number plate on my dash cam. if i do can i find out the owner without reporting the prang. ??

I understand that if you have reasonable cause for requiring details of ownership of another vehicle, then you can apply to the DVLA for keeper details.

https://www.gov.uk/request-information-from-dvla

Only you can say whether you feel it is worth pursuing ie your speed relative to the other vehicle, the relevant positions of both your vehicles on the road when the impact took place, and whether the dash cam clearly shows the other vehicle at fault.
How amenable the other driver is to coughing up for your mirror casing is another matter which needs to considered, along with where the other vehicle is registered. Is it something that could be resolved by letter if not local to you?
All in all, unless local to you, and with concrete evidence on your dash cam, I would say it is something you are going to have to grin and bear. Its going to probably cost you more in faffing about than the monetary value of a new mirror casing / painting / fitting.

I suspect what the Insurance Co want/expect you to do, and what 99% of the public would do in a similar situation are completely different things. ::)

Given the low costs involved, I'd let it go.  Especially if the mirror is still serviceable with the help of gaffer tape (where's tunnie when you need him ;D) until a correct colour one comes up on the Gay of E.

And the fact that there is room for one one car on the road leads to a possibility of it being both to blame, or if the other geezer finds a false witness, even becoming your fault.

total of £50 has sorted it . 30 for the casing from the dealers & a body shop gave me a price of £20 to spray it, he reckons it will cost him £8 in materials.

Depending on the damage to the beemer, it will probably cost them a lot more.
