Inflation
« on: 19 January 2022, 13:28:05 »

There will be a lot of youngsters that have never lived through inflation.

Fuel here has gone up nearly 10% in a couple of weeks. I dare say the situation in the Ukraine is not helping. It won’t be long before increased transport costs feeds into everyday items like groceries.

How long before wage rise demands ( and strikes?).?

My electricity charge recently went up by something like......40% high rate.....25% night rate....15% daily standing charge.

Prices are due to rise by a further 50% in a couple of months. This will inevitably lead to inflation.

People on a low income are going to struggle in 2022. :-\

Has anyone else noticed that despite the proliferation of green renewables hasn’t reduced the price of energy. I suspect that what happens is the savings are pocketed by the installer. We have half our electric in Andalucia from renewables and yet our bills are rocketing too.

Something like 25% of our energy bill is made up of the green energy tax.

The price of non renewables has been deliberately inflated (taxed) to make renewables look more attractive/viable. Green was never going to actually reduce bills.

Yep my supplier proudly tells me that my electricity is produced by renewable energy sources.  :y

My bills will go up in April because the wholesale price of natural gas has gone up massively.  ::)

I still have 15 months to run on the fixed price I got last April. If things don't settle down by then, my bills could rise by 500%  ;D

Our fixed rate ceases at the end of September so expecting a 50 percent rise at least.

The government could knock of the VAT and the Greta tax. ;)

This should account for about 30% of the 50% rise. ::) ::)

Will it happen? ::)

Green energy is significantly more expensive to produce than 'non green', it has high capital investment and produces very little energy. To put some perspective on this, the Thames wind array, one of the largest on the planet, can only produce slightly less than one Drax generator set (and Drax has 6 generator sets!)

It's a fallacy of monumental proportions to believe that wind ,tide and sun will provide the power required for a demanding ,modern world with such a voracious appetite for consumable products .
You'd better factor in the " net zero tax " that will be required to meet the 2030 gaol , and that's not a spelling mistake .

I think the increased cost of electricity is with us for evermore due to political , climate driven and covid incurred costs and will have an effect on voting trends in the very near future .
We live in interesting times .

I popped into Costco in Bristol earlier this evening and picked up a tray of lamb steaks which for years has cost between £11 - 13ish.

Tonight the same tray with 6 or 7 steaks cost between £20 -23 depending on weight  :o, so sadly they went back in the fridge rather than my trolley.  :(

Are you sure? If they are back in the fridge then you aren’t going to be tasting them!

I filled up at 1.47 today. It was 1.44 on Tuesday. Last tankful before was 1.34. I bet it is 1.60 by end of Jan.

It can’t be long before food prices start going up as a result of increased transport costs.

Food, in general, seems to be of a much poorer quality than it used to be. I put it down to the fact that my taste buds must be getting knackered.

I used to buy cod fish fingers. Now the word cod has been replaced by 'whitefish' of which 72% is pollock.

I don't want to know what the other 28% is. It may gives me nightmares. :D

I used to buy cod fish fingers. Now the word cod has been replaced by 'whitefish' of which 72% is pollock.

I don't want to know what the other 28% is. It may gives me nightmares. :D

I know that cod was over-fished and that other fish was/is being used as a substitute. I would prefer 100% cod fingers.

I usually buy fresh cod (without batter) and enjoy it with parsley sauce. Much more healthy. :)

A taste of things to come....  :-\
And I can see this government deciding to tax beef, because he lives we a silly tart who worships Greta.

Anyone noticed the number of adverts for plant based protein on the TV lately? :-\ :-\ :-X

Processed pap crap!  ::)

Swmbo has only complained about the price of eggs having gone up , I try not to get involved with food shopping as long as there's beer on her list..👍

Sounds Like you'll have to start sending Mrs Mick to Lidl rather than Waitrose!  :)   ;D

Got to be honest I would never buy any other than a free range egg, and at the moment Morrisons have 6 small eggs for 50p or 6 medium for £1. Free range  here.

I bought a half dozen box of extra large eggs from Lidl recently and five of them were double yolkers!  :y

Eggzactly, that’s smashing, you don’t have to shell out much, it’s a cracking deal, but don’t put them all in one basket, Easter’s coming we can all get smashed👍😂

I do still enjoy the fish from our local chippy, though, lovely white flakes of cod.
I have a rule to never eat anything that comes from the sea. I've pissed (and worse) in the sea.

Enjoy your cod.

I remember, back when I used to do a real job for a living, I had a couple of big chicken farms on my patch.  I frequently had to nip behind one of the sheds for a tactical chunder.

Inflation: Four things that are going up in price and why https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-60082564
In the case of meat, due to restuarnats being closed for quite a lot of the 1st year of the Chinky Sniffle, Mrs TB informs me that the supermarkets were selling better quality meats and ridiculously low prices.  So she is surprised that in the last year, it has "only" gone up around 10% from when it was dirt cheap.

I guess the subsequent rise in beef prices is why my regular steak and chips has got less regular :(

STMO is too old to notice the difference between cod and basa. ;) :D

I presume basa is much less expensive for the rogue chippy to buy. ::)
