NCDC2013 CDC non-functional..
« on: 29 December 2011, 09:20:32 »

I have been rendered sound-less.. well, aside from the clunking from the droplink I've never fixed, the slight rattle from the engine when cold and the woosh from the door that doesn't seal properly, but those don't count.

The radio stopped receiving the other day (after I'd had the whip antenna out, presume I need to check that the aerial base still has a good solid earth to the body) so I popped some CDs (real ones) into the CDC magazine and much to my delight, sounds began emanating from my speakers.

I ejected it last night to change the CDs and voila, it popped out.

Now it won't go back in.

Or to be exact, it slides in just fine, but bounces right back out - I assume there's a microswitch in there somewhere that is meant to activate some locking pawls, and that's not working? Known common fault? Fixable? Time to hunt down a depaired s/hand unit? Cry, stamp my feet and buy a new car? ;)

Those CDC3 mechanisms are a bit delicate, but hopefully a stripdown should reveal the problem.

If its distorted, though, its nigh on impossible to get its straightened, and easier to change the mechanism with a known good one.

One of the sensor switches is probably stuck.

Remove unit - give it a good thump to the rear using your hand only, refit, and you will probably find all is well again

Ta TB & Dave, I guess that'll be my job for the weekend then! It's most annoying only being able to listen to clunk-clunk-clunkety-clunk from the droplink on the way to work, and it means I talk to myself an alarming amount..  ;D

Doing technical today Dave?, your secrets out now, so half the faults get fixed by the Royal Mail before they even get to you.

One of the sensor switches is probably stuck.

Remove unit - impart single transient vibration from impact of a squidgy object weighing about 1.5lb at about 1 m/s to the rear , refit, and you will probably find all is well again

there ya go, fixed it for the technical version....   :y

 ;D

Well I figured out why the radio doesn't work, at least.. it seems like the aerial base has probably given up the ghost; the antenna part now wobbles up and down quite a bit, and it 'feels' like the threaded insert it screws into is spinning & wobbling, so probably torn off the cable inside.

D'oh. The bases are (very) expensive.
