just got a volvo 440 started . got stuck in a big puddle of water , and killed the engine. good thing i carry a power pack

that is a good car ,she just drowned the motor with water . no car goes with a wet engine

Any diesel engine car would, just needs a engine snorkel.

I bought an L-plate Volvo 440, 1.8 petrol, about 5yrs ago as a stop-gap whilst my Jeep Cherokee 2.5TD was having all four of it's heads skimmed... 

Only paid £150 for the 440 - with 12months MOT, and some tax left.  Weren't in bad nick either - no rust, just lots of moss growing out of the window seals.  After a weekend's valeting (I'm sad like that), she looked like new.

I got the Jeep back, and gave the Volvo to my father in law.  He got 2 years out of it, but then the headgasket went.  Turns out the rad was leaking, but he never checked any of the fluid levels (tell-tale spot of anitfreeze on the drive, right over where he parked it before it died).

Aye there are some bargain motors out there that just need a bit of tlc on them , a lot of cars just dont get the essentials like anti-freeze and oil/filter changes ... cars seem to becoming like throw away items now and easier/cheaper to buy another thats already got full mot and a bit of tax . Quite reliable as long as you dont drive through river's

440, is that the little "sporty" volvo from the later 80s?

The electrics on those are delicate enough without seeing if it will swim.

Essentially a Belgian built Renault you can't seriously expect the wiring to be waterproof
