OR     repair what you have.
what actually goes wrong with them.   worn pivots, edges, slots etc.   cannot they be repaired with weld or rebushed. ? the favorite for going wrong on cav/ manta lock catches was the pivot spring which made it hold as unlocked or locked ? what wears on omega ones typically ?

They rust solid.

I suspect from a combination of a lack of maintenance, (I suspect that the number of people here that regularly lube their latches sufficiently is around twenty...), and water dripping into the mechanism where the weather strip that extends from the bottom edge of the window to the back of the door splits.

If you're lucky they can be freed up, but the only real solution is to replace with a suitably greased replacement.

so as replacements eventually become harder to find ,soaking them in a pot of deox-c and then a bath of oil should get them back up and running again.
when i replaced my cl motor on the lock 5 years ago there was no obvious signs of rust but it did have all its covers intact and was oiled up on refitting.
im one of the "20" that regularly oil mine so that should help
but the locks ( and other parts of car) will eventually get to the stage where we will have to repair or modify to keep our cars going.
to me thats the fun of owning anything.

The covers don't help particularly. I have encountered failures on cars with and without.

The cover is designed to prevent the lock being surreptitiously being popped from above... Any weatherproofing they may offer is completely by accident  ;)

The front look should be less challenging to replace with an alternative, but the size/shape/position of the latch and the mounting screws are the limiting factor for options, followed by the operation of the handles and locks...  :-\

That's to say finding one that fits will be the (relatively) easy part.  ;)

My car doesnt get used a lot, the front passenger door went abit random when trying to unlock it, now has to be opened/closed manually all the time.  But this could be after some tosser put the button down and shut the door and we had to pull the button up with pliers.  it worked fine for a while and then became intermittant. :-\

That sounds like a central locking motor problem. The failure discussed above is a immediate and complete inability to open the door inside or out, regardless of the lock position.

It did work after the door lock was yanked with pliers though.
