Some years ago I had some 'Buy to let' properties. Just small 2 or 3 bed terraced, in our nearest large town. When looking to buy, I always offered well below the asking price, and sometimes got lucky.; It all depended on the sellers situation. Forced move? Repossessed? etc. it was surprising what was possible. Had my circumstances been different I would have gradually bought more. They proved an excellent investment, all sold now.

Yes we had the same all sold now in preparation for our retirement, never expected to inherit a couple though .

Just clearing Mums bungalow ready to go on the market. She only owned a percentage of it, the rest by the estate of my cousin, who was killed in a motorbike accident. Very inconvenient of him.  :(

We recently received some paperwork for life insurance that my grandmother held. Which  was a surprise, as she died in 1992. The snag is that the money is to be shared equally between her four children, and Mum is the only one left. What makes this particularly tricky is that Dave died in America in 1998, and his estate was dealt with by Viv who died in France just before Christmas. We have Chris' paperwork which makes this "easy." Mum's technique for dealing with this sort of thing is like the Two Ronnies' sketch of Answering the previous question with the added twist of misunderstanding what was asked, so that confused her, Dad, me and every representative of Wesleyan Insurance who had the misfortune to get involved. Dad's deaf as a post and won't touch computers so it's going very slowly. The hourly rate for claiming about £6k is unlikely to be profitable......

just a thought for those inheriting, particularly when the inheritance may tip you over the inheritance tax limit.  Its worth looking into this sooner rather than later as it is possible to vary the original will to pass your inheritance to someone else.  There is a two year limit to do this from the death of the deceased.  Its obviously a complex thing to think through and i would be the last person to recommend any particular action but for those interested search for a " deed of variation" in connection with a Will.

just a passing thought that may be useful...

Some years ago moving to Wales I put an offer in on a fairly big house. £85k below asking price. This was about 25% reduction.

The estate agent actually did laugh and it was turned down flat. A year later the property was still unsold and went to auction where it sold for £10k less than my final offer.

The one we are selling would in "perfect" condition go for around £400,000 it needs a fair bit of work to bring it up to our acceptable standard so we priced it accordingly & got exactly what we wanted.😁
