Omega General Help / Re: V6 mpg
« on: 12 December 2006, 20:43:40 »
Seems a little on the low side, I get 17mpg and run a 2.5 but I live in a very hilly area, when on the motorway I get 32mpg which seems about the norm for a 2.5 V6 auto

Omega General Help / Re: Steering wobble and pull to left.
« on: 27 November 2006, 23:25:25 »
Sorry I haven't posted for a few day been away at work.. :(

I had the wishbones changed in july this year after failing the MOT due to worn bushes, I then changed the rear shocks in september and at this point I decided that because I had work carried out on the suspension it would be best it I got the geometry adjusted. Its only been since the geometry was adjusted the problems have become more noticable, being a logical guy I put it down to the steering being much lighter as it used to be very heavy before. Although the geometry is now true, I suspect some sort of failure in a suspension component but the question is which part? I can't find and problem with the wishbones (both bushes both sides and balljoint look fine) and steering idler looks okay, my suspicion is the springs as the car has now done almost 104000 miles and 100000 miles seems to be about the correct time for failure. i'm going to do the tests that tony suggested weather permitting. When I describe the pull to the left it seems to be more noticable when braking its not so much of a pull but its as if its easier to steer to the left, not sure if this is a fault but it could be related to the camber on the road. It just doesn't seem right.

wishbones were changed earlier this year, but not the steering idler, where is this steering idler located and what should I look for?

these are the before and after results I had previously posted here, I do remember tony replying later on in the thread but he didn't see anything wrong.

Omega General Help / Steering wobble and pull to left.
« on: 23 November 2006, 23:52:29 »
Up until recently I've had many months of trouble free motoring, I had the geometry adjusted last month without problems, however since then I have noticed a wobble from the steering wheel when hitting potholes or when driving on uneven roads, the car also wants to pull to the left under braking, anyone have any idea if this is normal behaviour as now the steering wheel since the geometry alterations does seem alot lighter, and if not where is the best place to look for a problem. I'm thinking the pull to the left may be a problem with the brake pads which I'm getting changed when I get time

Cheers....

Zoltron....how much did it cost as I'm not too far from Halesowen.

It was nearly £62 with the VAT but they did have to do all 4 corners of the car, it drives like a dream now. Steering used to be very heavy, now its very light and it got some getting used to.

I had a terrible screeching from the front wheels and still do slightly, I had my geometry adjusted last thursday at chemix in halesowen. the before measurements were terrifiying.

Left Front                                                Front Right

Camber -1*46'                                        Camber -2*31'

Caster 4*38'                                           Caster 5*05'

Toe -12.6mm                                          Toe -13.0mm

                         Total Toe -25.6mm

                         Steer Ahead 0*01'

Left Rear                                                 Right Rear

Camber -1*43'                                         Camber -1*47'

Toe 0.7mm                                              Toe 0.6mm

                          Total Toe 1.3mm

                         Thrust Angle 0*00'

After Results were much better

Left Front                                                Front Right

Camber -1*48'                                        Camber -1*18'

Caster 4*38'                                           Caster 5*05'

Toe 1.0mm                                             Toe 1.1mm

                           Total Toe 2.1mm

                          Steer Ahead 0*00'

Left Rear                                                 Right Rear

Camber -1*39'                                         Camber -1*44'

Toe 1.3mm                                              Toe 2.0mm

                          Total Toe 3.3mm

                        Thrust Angle -0*02'

I was told the left caster could not be adjusted and although the value was incorrect it was not worth going to the expense of getting it sorted as it could be down to a machining fault at production. anyone got any feedback on the above values and slight squeeling from the one front tyre. I'm thinking the rubber may just be a little softer on that tyre.

9 times out of 10 coolant loss on 2.5 & 3.0 engines is down to the HBV, not sure if the 2.2 has one but if it does the i'm sure this is where you will find your problem. I'm sure someone will be along soon who can verify what i mean.

Phoned VX today in response to my problem with the orange rubber seals that fit inside the pressure line connectors that connect to the upper part of the rear shocks. I was told that it is normal for the rubber seals to become damaged when replacing the shocks and as a result of refitting, and a new set can't be brought, you have to but the whole pressure line for both sides that go back to a t-junction near the exhaust. Any one got any ideas, the price and part numbers VX quoted are £14.92 P/N 90473520, & £12.81 P/N 90473519

Someone who I know works at Vauxhall got them for me, they cost £123 for a pair of genuine vauxhall P/N 72119084, but you need the mounting kit as well, which includes the spacer which slides into the lower rubber bush, and the two metal washers, one sits under the bottom bush and the other compresses the top upper bush with the supplied nut.

Job was a bit of a mare to do, due to the usual reasons, someone tightening the upper 15mm nut way too tight, its only supposed to be to 15nm, in the end what was normally a 1 man job needed 2 men, one to hold the upper part of the strutt while the other unbolted the top nut, the lower 21mm bolt came out with no problems I was expecting it to have seized.

Omega General Help / Changed shocks

Changed the shocks today, after a long wait for the rain to pass...

Well knackered they were....

All working fine, or seems to be, however when reconnecting the hoses from the compressor for the self leveling suspension. How do the orange rubber seals sit inside the connector block that connects onto the suspension strutt. As the shocks work as they should when you hit bumps, but the height doesn't seem to lift that great, the compressor works as when you disconnect the hoses you can hear air escaping from them but, when the hoses are connected to the strutt & you disconnected them there is no whosh of air from the strutt, as I thought you might have heard.

I would give the rear shocks careful consideration, that why I replaced mine last week. I had a wierd leak coming from the back but could not find it then when removing the rear wheel, to check the brake pads I found the shock was well knackered, the oil coming from it smelt foul. So I changed em both. Leak stopped.. :)

check that out that is my knackered shock, and if you look at the road you can see the oil leak from it when I sometimes park the wrong way round on the road.
