Hi, just to keep the info flowing, i have today booked my gls 2.5 v6 in with the vx garage !!
i have got better quotes from some local garages but one -saw how they worked, one- spoke to a mechanic who couldnt really be arsed, one -who actually wanted to charge more than vx and two- who said they didnt need the locking kit for the cambelt change!
so dont laugh at me for going to vx -the work is as follows-
cambelt kit change,
water pump change (seems stupid not to)
 thermostat change,
 check out on tech2,
 and if confirming -the crank sensor replacement.
total £818
i bought the car relatively cheap so dont mind splasing a little out to get it nice and trim.
hope its a little indicater for someone, tone. ;)

 :o  :o  :o  :o Where in the country are you? There must be someone nearer you who can do the job for a lot less. You could buy a complete car for that amount!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm almost tempted to drive to your house and do it for that amount  ;)

Friendly chaps their will do it a damn site cheaper than that!!

Way, way, way too much.  You can do this belt yourself. In fact you can do all this work yourself and get decent change from £200 (dunno how much stat is).

i am in kings lynn, norfolk. i have got the car booked in for next tuesday. problem is i have nowhere to do the work -ive a garage (i can just about get the car into) no driveway and while the weather is as it is not good conditions to repair in! if anyone can source the parts and do the job locally i will willingly give them a substantial backhander!

If you can't get the car in the garage and work on it at the same time just put the front of the car in the garage while you work. None of the jobs you mention are very difficult if you want to tackle them yourself. I hate to pay for labour on jobs that I can do myself.

A thermostat from Vx is apparently £45!  :-?

I've got TC (Vauxhall Trade Club discount for parts) and can help with the parts if you need 'em on the cheap, as I am sure others here can. Can't help with work though...  :(

Hi, cheers. kings lynn is not always the best to get to -at the moment most of the main roads into it have major roadworks on them! oh and theres not one motorway in norfolk!!

Thats stupid monay, shoudl be about 320 for the cambelt plus say 60 quid for the water pump.

Then 40 for a stat, housing and bolts and tops an hour fitting say 70 quid

Tops of 500 notes (and I'm being generous).

On the crank sensor, just buy one and fit it yourself, it realy is easy.

Honestly mate, that is a comical quote, and there is no guarantee that the work done by the dealership will be of any decent quality!

Bring your car to Nothants or Notts and you will get the work done a LOT cheaper and done to a much higher standard!

It will be a day out for you, you will learn a lot and you will have a heck of a lot more money in your pocket! :)

I would say for the price of a crank sensor you may as well just replace it (they are about £40 for a pattern part). There are some good garages in norfolk have a look around before accepting that price. Oh and just to add the crank sensor does not always flag up on a tech2.

A failed cranksensor will always show a code, but in some cases (if car won't start) a cranksensor code showing is not always conclusive... ;)
