lpg - loss of a spare legal ?

I'm just about to join the Omega owners club with a 2.2 CDX.

I'm still planning to go lpg, possibly with a toroidal tank, but I have 2 questions :

1.    Is is it illegal not to carry a spare wheel, and just use an aerosol ?

2.    Is it really impossible to change the bulbs in the n/s light cluster if a toroidal tank is fitted ? Can you fit led bulbs that should rarely fail ? (and where from ?)

Martin Imber is your man.......and no, its not illegal to have no spare wheel (most sports cars have no spare).

Can't comment on the bulb replacement......

The tank is same size as spare wheel and goes in same place - and you need to remove this to get bulbs out.....

Don't need to carry a spare , but if you do it must have legal tread depth and must be inflated to the correct pressure , otherwise the "old bill" can do you! Seems a bit strange realy. :-? :-?

Hi, I tried using LED bulbs in my rear lights, it was not a success, the MID display kept telling me there was a fault on the lights, I tried fitting ballast resistors to each bulb to stop this. It did stop the messages on the display, but the resistors were getting hot enough to fry an egg on,  I removed them very quickly and put the old bulbs back in, end of experiment.

Hi there,
I too have been thinking about LPG, (just got the kit today but that's another story) and Mark DTM is right, there is no room to do a normal bulb replacement. However, I was wondering if it wouldn't be possible to undo the 4 nuts holding in the actual light housing and thus pull it out of the body, and thus be able to replace the bulbs. I haven't tried it yet but.... Also another thought, what shape will your tank be?. The rear wing has been shaped to hold a spare tyre which is a certain shape. Now, some toroids on sale have a rounded shape, others are more cylindrical with rounded edges, so although they may be the same radius and width, they might not fit!. I asked a question re LPG recently and someone sugested Tinley as a good source of parts. I had a quick chat with him and he 'Might' let you try some of his tanks before buying ( if suitably chatted up first). If you look at Gascarco.com photo galleries there is an Omega with a tank in the spare wheel arch. There is no mention if he was able to change the bulbs after ;D

I often take the spare wheel out for the MoT. If its in there, they can fail you on it. If its not then its not a problem.

Never used that tyre weld stuff, but I know someone with a Range Rover who used that type of tank on an LPG conversion and was happy to replace the spare with a couple of tins of tyre weld and reckons it works okay.

I've got a tin of the tyre weld that I keep in the car and I also bought a space saver to chuck in the back.

Some Jags (and possibly others) come with a rather nifty spare idea - its a compact inflatable wheel and a compressor.  Not sure if I fancy driving far on a rubber ring though...

...so if you get stopped for a spot-check and your spare if naff, all you need do if lift the boot lid, take out the spare and throw it as far away as you can shouting 'now who's rubbish is this?' then turn to the constable and say 'good evening officer, I don't actually carry a spare, this was just a piece of junk someone forgot in my boot'...  :o

I tried a tin of tyre weld once.....didnt work  :( but then maybe i didnt use it correctly, i was told afterwards you are suppose to jack the car up first, which i didnt  :-/

And the tyre place wasnt impressed they had to clean out a tyre full off white gunk before they could repair the tyre!

Ive got a space saver in the boot now  :y

My worry with only having the can of goo was what if you had a blow out rather than just a puncture? At least the space saver is ready to fit and should definitely get you home  :)

This link may be useful for everyone. Its something that i have been involved with at work and is a mine of PROPER legal advice available to all of the public. It may well be useful to place it in a FAQ on this site  if considered prudent. It is very intuitive. Just search under T for your query and see what you come up with.

The new Honda Civic does not come with a spare wheel at all, instead you get a tin of tyre weld type stuff and a compressor.

Given how most tyre fitters put the bolts back on when new tyres are put on, the chances of getting the wheel off with the soppy little wheel braces that come with most cars are pretty slim anyway!

Last two times I've had to change tyres the tyres have been knackered, nail caused blow out at 80 and hitting a protrusion

Have a spare!
