A bunch of fault codes on my V6
« on: 03 December 2006, 00:36:30 »

Did nearly a 400 mile drive tonight, as the Mrs wanted to buy a dog from North Wales.

Had covered about 50 miles, and the Engine management light kept flashing on, every time I took my foot off the throttle and let the revs drop.

The old girl felt a little sluggish (only a little) - felt more like it is lacking a bit of torque rather than power, because it still goes up to the red line no problem. MPG seems ok, did nearly 400 miles on £50, all motorway miles averaging.. er.. 90 MPH ish (roads were dead!)

So - in the services, I decided to get my diagnostic tool, er, paperclip, and read off the codes.

I got codes:

145
135
132
129
31

I took the reading with the engine running. Can anyone explain what the codes are and point to a possible cause? I've tried looking on Topbuzz, but the site is timing out.

The EML has flickered on and off on some very rare occasions ever since Ronnie/Dave and I changed my timing belt kit and cleaned out the plenum/breathers, but I can't see it being related, because I've re-seated all connections since, which are fine.

They're definately new fault codes, because I stole the battery off this car for a few hours yesterday, which would have cleared any historic ones.

No urgency, because it's running (reasonably) fine, but thoughts would be appreciated as to why I've got these codes, and a slight loss of guts in the higher gears!

Forgot to mention, my exhaust has been blowing a bit from one of the mid-sections for a couple of days, I wonder if it's related to the codes? Wouldn't have thought so, but anything's possible on these electrical minefields ;D

31 is crank sensor and shouldnt be there if the engines running
129 is EGR valve feedback voltage low
132 is EGR valve feedback incorrect signal
135 is Telltale (checklight) voltage low
145 is Immobiliser incorrect signal

Most of the V6 codes are in the maintenance area

You clearly have a problem with the connector/wiring to the EGR valve so this should be the first port of call......this is also hinted at by the symptoms described and the times when the light goes on and off.

Note that on the Motronic system, the fault codes are stored in non volatile memory so removing the battery wont clear them.

Agree with Mark, v6 ECUs cannot be cleared by unplugging.  Only way to clear is a set number of clean starts, or using a code reader.

I wouldn't worry too much about the immobiliser one - yet to confirm, but not entirely convinced that code ever deletes itself automatically.  Seems to be very common.

Concentrate for poor connections around egr.
