V6 Cambelt Change
« on: 03 December 2006, 15:56:44 »

I just wanted to say a big thanks to Jamie for the loan of the cam locking kit and to Mark and Robin H for taking the time and effort to make the DVD.

I changed my cambelt, aux belt and water pump this weekend which is something i never would have dreamed of attempting before joining the forum. All went well, and it was a really satisfying experience.

Thanks again guys.

Well done :)

It is indeed satisfying, and saves giving so much money to those dumb dealers, who probably wouldn't have done as good a job as you did anyway

You’ve done it have you? Did they mention the little rubber grommet at the base of the crank pulley that must be renewed or the engine will go belly-up? They didn’t? well you’ll have to do it all over again mate…  :o

Just kidding of course, well done!   :y you are a braver man than me, I had mine done at Vx and forked-out £320 for the pleasure (haggled them down from £420!).  :'(

If the 2.2 is the same design as a 1.6 16v I reckon you could do it in that time if you were doing an Astra. A piece of wee wee. (not including the water pump  :-[ )

Cheers guys.

If anyone has a V6 and the cambelt needs changing, seriously consider doing it yourself.

£3 for the DVD and a loan from someone of the cam locking tool is all you will need.

It REALLY is nowhere near as daunting as you might think. Go on, give it a go!

Well done Rock it is a big achievement when you hear it purring away. :y

Not quite v6 level but I have done 2x 2.0's 16v now and its a good feeling once done.

Dead easy 2nd time round and the same method applies to the 2.2 to my understanding.

Pretty similar, its the white silk gloves that Auto Addict makes you wear when touching his engine bay that I find the worst.

As a pointer for anybody changing the cambelt and water pump on a Vx 16V 4 pot....mark the position of the old water pump before removing it.....on some models it can be roatated which affects the belt length.

Is that specific to engine size 2.0 or 2.2 only both the 2.0's I did there wasn't a wrong way of fitting the waterpump as it sits with one part which is kinda shaped to the edge of the cambelt cover and the obvious in the hole. Perhaps its specific to the age of the car.
