Title: XP Antivirus
Post by: Sir Tigger KC on 07 April 2015, 20:39:59
Can anyone recommend a free antivirus that works with XP please?  ::)  It's my Mum's computer and her computer 'chap' put Avast on it a year ago, and now they want a subscription.  Microsoft Essentials won't work on XP, so I've downloaded AVG, but that's only a 30 day free trial.  :(

I know that you're all going to scream "Get a new computer" but it's my Mum's and she only uses it for general surfing and emails.  ::)  Believe me a new computer will be traumatic so I'm putting off the dreaded day, even though I know it's inevitable!!  ;D

TIA!  :y

Get rid of XP as soon as you can.  Win10 is coming out later this year and will be free.

XP is a liability so make sure nowt important is done on it, and by that I include emails. :y

Try Malawarebytes, they do a free one and its pretty good, so good that I bought the full version, it was only about 20 quid or so and they have great support too.I use it on XP.

Guffer is right about XP though, its on its last legs now and wont even work properly or at all on some websites.

I dont think Windows 10 is going to be free for everybody, there are conditions I believe.

Steve...your man probably put the trial version in. Iirc, the proper free version keeps going :y
I used Avast for ages, never had to pay. :y

I believe Windows 10 will be a free upgrade to Windows 7 and 8 users only :y

Another ++ for Avast free version, plus freebie Malawarebytes anti-malware.

Win 10 freebie ok for win 8 & 8.1  users plus Win7 SP1.

Thanks chaps!  :y

I'll leave the AVG for the free trial, and will then have another look at Avast.  :y

I personally would ignore the above and stick with XP, its working and in reality as a home user, the lack of support will be no big issue. Put the later OS on and you are VERY likely to hit a wall performance wise.

But on the anti virus, you have to follow the install screens very carefully as the try to get you down the 30 day free and pay later route so read carefully before clicking.

Stick a version of Win 7 on it.
Win 7 will run nearly all Xp devices and the security if much better
