Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Electric Cooling Fans
« on: 17 May 2011, 13:58:26 »
My cooling fan has pretty much seized, I have been struggling to locate a replacedment.
Having only ever seen mine up close and personal, I was wondering how interchangable the actual fan is once removed from it housing?
Regards
Alex

Occasionally it is only corrosion on the bottom of the bulb or the contacts, often got them working by scraping the base of them on a handy piece of tarmac/concrete/paving slab delete as appropriate. If its the contacts it will look different to other contacts or areas of metal not in contact with the bulb. I often use a bit of Vaseline to help protect them.

Well I have managed to un-yellow the headlights using BRASSO, an old t-shirt, a rubber sanding block and elbow grease, whether it will be good enough to pass the MOT is another question as there are still crazed or hazy patches on the lenses.
I reckon I am going to sell the HID lights rather than try and fit them, making it a fully legal fit sounds like far too much hassle. If they do pass the MOT I may in the future consider replacing current lamps with regular projector lamps.
For now I need to save the pennies and replace all the shocks.

It would appear that the pair I bought off of ebay are HID version despite not being described as such, I am beginning to get the impression that the projectors and the HID are the same shell. Unfortunately my car does not have the loom suitable for use with HID lamps, I am missing the 2 pin connection to the high voltage unit for a start.

Hi
To swap to projector lamps are any additional parts needed? was given an advisory last year at MOT for yellowed headlamps (amongst other things  :'( ) I guess they couldn't fail them as they had attempted to polish them only the previous year.

Omega General Help / Re: car missing on number 3 plug

Question is, how are you testing them as to do it correctly you need a large gap test plug to simulate the required 30-40mm gap.

If you work on a small gap you get no indication as to if the coil is ok and can also apply to low a load to it which may damage it.

Does the same apply to my issue on an X20XEV? I tried checking the sparks with a spark plug in the end of a HT lead and a jump lead from there to the battery negative.

Well hopefully I have found someone to borrow a compression tester off of if he remembers it tomorrow.

If the EGR valve is the source would it affect only one cylinder constantly or would it be random?

I note that being attached to the same item the DIS it's going to be a right @r5e to get off.

Can't see why it would affect only pot 4 TBH, but are you 100% sure that it is always pot 4?

Compression test is a good idea, let me know if your lender doesn't remember, I've got one I could pop in the post to you, if you're happy to cover the postage cost.  Remember to prop the throttle open before running your tests.

DIS (and EGR) are slightly awkward to remove, but DIS suddenly looks easier once the HT leads are all off and out the way.  Do make yourself a little sketch of which goes where before you pull them off though.

Another thing to be aware of: although it's tempting to lean on the camcover while you're working 'down the back', it is only plastic, so spread any load out with a cushion or something to minimise the chance of 'squishing'/distorting it with point-loads and potentially disturbing the gasket.  From what you've said yours is already leaking, so this probably doesn't matter so much just now.

Edit: Oh, and do a paperclip test!  Easiest diagnostic aid.  :)

Only plastic!!!! hm well that might have been useful to know several years ago, I cant say then that has not been me that has caused the leak around the cover  :'( I always assume it was a sturdy bit of aluminium that looked nice a 'comfortable' to take my weight.

I will try to read the codes this weekend to see if anything turns up.

Well new plugs and leads fitted, still missing  :'(

Not been able to check the compression, didn't want to have to buy a tester and not been able to borrow one. I don't understand how compression could be affected that much by engine temperature, would I not be detecting water in my oil or vice-versa?

/sighs
I guess I shall just bite the bullet and replace the coil!

Omega General Help / X20XEV Misfire
« on: 29 August 2011, 16:12:18 »
Hi

My car on returning from a holiday with about 1000 miles of driving, first day back at work decided it had had enough.
It has developed a misfire that is not there when the car is cold but quickly appears as the engine warms up and is very obvious at idle as the car rocks from side to side, however periodically and briefly the misfire disappears. I am unable to tell if the misfire disappears or continues at high revs.

I have checked the sparks by attaching a jump lead between the plug and negative on the battery and all cylinders are all sparking.
I tried removing the HT leads one at a time when the engine was warm to determine which didn't make a difference, removing the front 3 all made the engine more resistant to starting, only the rear made no difference. It does appear that the misfire is consistently on the rear most cylinder even if it is not consistently misfiring.

I am getting a bit of oil in the plug wells but no mayonnaise in the oil or film in the water reservoir, the visual condition of all the spark plugs according to the haynes manual is close to ideal if not ideal (does this imply that at higher revs the misfire disappears or have I not done enough miles with the misfire?). The plugs are however at least 4 years old but I only normally do about 5000 miles a year.

The idle control valve, and the breather needle valve have both been cleaned back in April, I have done about 1500 miles since then.

I am not getting the engine management light showing whilst the engine is running at the moment, I have not tried to read the codes.

I am hoping it is not a fuel injector.

Has anyone got any ideas please?

Hi
Last time I stripped down the actuators and cleaned them back to bare metal. Pull was still a bit unbalanced once I had finished.

Test centre only issued an advisory for the brakes, although it failed on other stuff but not so bad its getting scrapped.

I shall replace the rear discs and go for non budget pads and see if that helps.
Cheers all.

I have done so more than twice now, very carefully!  :-[

Well its booked in for it MOT on Friday, if it fails on too much it will get scrapped! Even the garage remembered it as it was such a puzzle!

Right its that MOT time of year again, the handbrake has degraded since last year and I am at a loss as to how to fix it. I can get it to sort of work but I have to use 2 hands to pull it up and it wont stay on a steepish slope.

I have followed the good advice in the guide hosted on this forum, I am certain I now need new discs however I am trying to locate other possible causes of poor handbrake effectiveness.

I notice when getting someone to pull the handbrake the balance adjustement bar in the car starts as wonky ie not parallell with rear 'axel' and then pulls into straight, however the cable seems to move freely through the guides at the rear ( by pulling either side of the guide using my hands).

The mechanisums and the in hub adjuster are all adequately greased and free to move.

how likely is it that the cable needs replacing even if it appears to move freely?

Any sugesstions greatfully recieved, I am reluctant to scrap it as I cant afford to buy a new car  :-[

I followed the guide when I carried out the original servicing and fitments of the new shoes. Its one of the reasons why I am at such a loss, the only thing I can think to do now is to replace the handbrake cable on the off chance.
