Omega General Help / Re: installing front shocks
« on: 18 November 2010, 13:08:51 »
Once the strut is dismantled look at the ball bearing race in the top mount (yellow & green plastic rings on most Ive seen)
These can be dismantled if you are carefull and cleaned out and regreased. If there is any pitting to the raceways or rust they should be replaced.
Pitting or 'hammer' marks in the races cause the strut to want to stick in one position which can casus the steering to centre up with a slight off set and a sort of wandering or "tacking" from side to side when tring to steer straight.

Yep.
You also need the spring clip that holds the joint together.

Why didnt you just get the bits form a breaker?

Omega General Help / Re: New fuel pump but no power please help
« on: 18 October 2010, 20:40:13 »
On the V6 the fuel pump relay is only turned on once the ecu sees pulses from the crank sensor, ie the immobiliser has to be happy, the engine has to be turning and the crank sensor has to be generating good quality pulses.

Very rare failure.

Second hand should be fine but, get them in a vice with some heat before fitting to free them off.

Use heat as Mark says to free off the adjusters then get grease into the internal threads...you shouldnt have any problems with them seizing in future and your wheel alignment centre will be amazed / dissapointed they cant charge for freeing them off.

Pull off both rubber bungs then put a hirdryer into one of the holes for a while. You need to re-seal it though, the condensation leads to mould or algae on the inside of the lens which can be an MoT fail if it gets bad.

If you are very careful you can remove the gearbox by just removing the downpipes at the manifold end and leaving them attached to the centre section. The gearbox just squeezes through.

You can do it this way but it makes access to the bell housing bolts so much more difficult and there is less space to 'lose' the propshaft.
The whole weight of the front pipes and cats would be supported by the front wall of the middle silencer cans, not good if they are begining to rust.

ATF from the gearbox, it circulates through a pipe in the end of the water radiator and gives up excess heat to the coolant
You will lose a little fluid changing the pipe but could have lost more through the leak over time.
Would be worth checking the box fluid level.

Proz, I have a set of these pipes cluttering up my garden path, you are welcome to them for the postage.

Have the bit that bolts to the radiator and the longer part that includes the rubber hose and runs all the way back to the gearbox. Might be able to find the banjo bolts and washers for the radiator end as well.

PM me if you want any of this.

Omega General Help / Re: Squeeeeeeeling breaks

Only when you apply the brakes? Check the anti-rattle springs have not rusted away or cracked, else try filing a small chamfer on the pad leading edge. Copper grease on the back of the pad and ordinary grease on the metal contact points wont go amis.

If the noise is there all the time have you checked the handbrake?

The two likely suspects are:
Baffles in the back box have rotted away and the sound deadening material is blocking gas flow, you sometimes see "hair" sticking out of the tail pipe.
Fuel filter not changed recently or clogged with dirt or water from poor fuel.

Problems with cats or centre boxes would tend to also have rough running symptoms as they affect one bank only.

The dispack is made up of three double-ended coils so a faulty coil knocks out two cylinders.
Can you check the leads with a multimeter? resistance should be around 2k for the short one to 5k-ish for the longest.

Omega General Help / Re: y26se oil leak newbie
« on: 19 August 2010, 14:01:26 »
I doubt if it is the head gasket, there are no pressure-fed oilways in that area, only the return paths to the sump.
There is a metal breather box above the starter, behind the 1-3-5 head.
Another possible source is the oil cooler pipe unions in the valley, oil might track from here along the line of the 1-3-5 head to block joint before dripping down.
The usual advice is to remove all the old oil with gunk etc and dry it off then follow the leak back to source, some chalk dust or talk might help you trace it.

Use the grey sealant as used on the oil cooler plate, degrease both faces with cellulose thinners first.

The joint is too thin for the black stuff to work / survive well.
