Astra J - Clutch
« on: 07 October 2013, 09:19:54 »

Work colleague has a '61 Plate Astra J, he had to take train in today as his clutch has failed. sub 20k miles, foot to the floor on the clutch  :o

Quick Google suggests fairly common problem? He says it had "extra" power from the dealer, cost him £2k upgrade  ???  ??? ???

Think he has been had to be honest, no idea on the engine though  :-\

Never heard of any issues with Clutch on Astra J.

The fault sounds like either a burst slave cylinder or a failed master as opposed to the clutch plate itself.

But a performance upgrade from the factory.......

Thanks, I'll pass that on  :y

I wondered about the power upgrade, I know the same engine for diesels can be 110/130/150 for example so wondered if it was part of a "pack" - But looking at it, it's a standard J  :-\

Well he was going to take it to his "local guy" told him to go via Vx as it should be covered really? Ok the plate would be standard wear clause, but if it's slave cylinder or a failed master that really should be changed for warranty.

So going to Drive Vauxhall near here I think, be interesting to see what happens.

A curry says 'no fault found' :-X

Iirc sister in laws problem was a grumbling when the pedal was used along with inconsistent biting point when cold.

Dont all the Astra-J's have (limited) "lifetime" warranties?

If he's done a clutch in 20k through wear and tear, he deserves to be butt rapped by the dealer.

Is it the clutch plate though? Would a failed plate give issues engaging gear, not going foot to the floor?

I see the plate as wear & tear, but not the slave cylinder ect?

Maybe he has been riding the clutch  :-\

Yeah, if its a hydraulic clutch, I'd be looking at hydraulic problems if the pedal just hits the floor.  A shagged clutch plate (as in worn) normally just creates slip.

Its a hydraulic clutch so first port of call has to be fluid level in the brake/clutch reservoir.

Pedal catching on floor covering or the panelling above feet?
