Heater bypass valve?  Any advice?
« on: 05 March 2007, 08:38:45 »

2002 V6 cdx auto. I have a leak from what I thought was a heater hose behind engine. My local garage think it's a valve and say it's a big job. After 5 days they still have not come up with a price, stating waiting to hear from Vauxhall dealer.. They guess £100-£150 for part and 4 hours labour. (Remove wiper mechanism etc) Am only able to do 2-3 miles before warning shows and don't like using it but like walking less!. Any one familliar with this job.

HBV is £25 from dealer, and you can change it yourself - wipers and scuttle off should give you sufficient access.

the hbv is around £25 plus vat from a main dealer. it is a job that you can do yourself. a little advice though. be careful undoing any nuts. make sure you dont sheer the off or you'll be in trouble. taking of tyhe scuttle panel is a fidlly job and there are plastic srcrews under the window rubber that need turing to allow the panel to come out. the hbv is just about acessable once the panel has been removed. its just a vcase of swapping the pipes in the correct way onto the new valve. after you have put the new valve on run the engine to see if the pipes get hot. do this before you put the panel and wipers back because any problems and its all got to come of again. you should be able to do this job in around and hour and a half therfore saving you a few quid to go out and get drunk with instead

good luck and be patient when removing the nuts and screws

honestly mate the hbv.is relatively easy, once the wipers, scuttle are off its not to bad, obviousley having the right tool for the clips!!! would help immensley,im not a mechanic in the slightest and even i did it in just under 2 hours..!!!
dont forget though, lots of swearing at it(particulary the clips) and ditto the box of plasters... ;)

I did this job last weekend. £25+VAT for the valve. £14 for the tool to get the clips off (Halfrauds). Two hours to get the wipers off. The rest is easy but fiddly. Take the scuttle off - 7 screws hidden under window rubber, one on the drivers side inner wing.

HBV is difficult to get to... got my better half to help out here - she has smaller hands!

Oh and the comment about the plasters...hmmm well you'll find out! :'(

Good luck!

I don't know what all the fuss is about.

HBV is an easy job, just a tiny (and I mean tiny) bit fiddly. Scuttle being off is extremely helpful for access, although I have done this job without.

Only tool I used was a pair of plumbing grips.. any decent pair of pliers should get the clips off.. or a little pair of mole grips

Don't trust that garage, they clearly don't know what they're talking about.

If your not confident to do the job yourself, try asautocare he is a VX specialist only in widnes (2 mins of runcorn bridge) I would personaly reccomend him and he does a special offer for software updates for OOF members, see my other thread  8-)

4 hours labour, theyre havin a laugh mate. According to Vaux its a 0.9 hour job so even at their extortionate rates about £80. When mine needed changing my 13 year old son did it for me and he managed it in much less than four hours.

Doh! Just noticed where you live! You'll be lucky if you hear from Vantage - it takes 'em all their time to answer the bloody phone.
Bring it to my house! Off 'Brangy Rd'  ;)

HEATER BYPASS VALVE: Sundy 11th March. Having been quoted ridiculous prices by various garages, forum member Andy B has just replaced mine (Total stranger, as a favour). Took one hour. Very grateful. Nice chap with understanding wife!

I totally agree with you. I fixed this problem, 2 month ago, but in my case almost all cooling agent was lost.
Also, local dealers encountered problems with this GM part code (something changed in GM code catalog during time). My spare HBV arrived from Germany in 5 days and it cost around 80 euro.

I notice you said wiper mechanism, it's only the wiper arms and blades that need to come off, a 5 minute job at worst, so i'd be asking them about that.

All they want to do is try and justify their labour times by removing bits that don't need removed.  >:(

Give it a go yourself, you'll be surprised how easy it is.  :y
