I've never used a scanning device before so have no idea how it works or what its limits are. However I assumed that if the ICU was expecting a "service" to be performed then maybe the scanner could override that particular code and prevent the control indicator from lighting up ? Is that how it works or am I a long way off ?

Long way off - its lit because something isn't right. That has to be fixed

BTW I wasnt expecting a freebie, just someone who knows what they're doing 

Sorry, I can't vouch for briy2's capabilities as I simply don't know him (and no disrespect to him - he might be a god with Omegas for all I know). But having codes is a first step, so post them up, and we can all suggest what to try.

The scanner may, for example, come up with a MAF code. That does not necessarily mean the MAF is faulty. Other things can cause it. Thats were, collectively, this forum scores - we have more Omega knowledge than any garage/dealer/other internet site.

i will happily read codes but wont go any further than that with someone car other than my own I have worked on cars all my life and the omega can be a mystery to me that's the great thing about this forum

AFAIK none of the Omegas have any service intervals coded into the ECU

The Omega has current codes and stored codes. The current codes bring on the warning light, stored codes don't.

Generally as soon as a fault is fixed the warning light should go out.

If you have an intermittent fault then it is worth clearing the stored codes so you can see if they recur.

The other time you might want to reset things is if you have been running with something that skews the AFR such as an air leak, a faulty MAF (or a dodgy LPG system) and the long term trims are way out.

This is the service indicator light we're talking about here. My Snap-on Solus wwill reset it but it comes on again almost immediately. The code behind this is "service due"

Out of interest, is the code something like 1700, and the car is an auto? If so, read the autobox ecu as well. Or if its a manual converted from auto, come see me (or Kevin Wood) to reconfigure ecu

AFAIK, there is no "needs a service soon" on the Omega, everything is a result of a fault code.

OK to update the topic.

Met with Bri (thanks once again Bri - very pleasant bloke as all OOFers seem to be) and he read the ECU and Autobox ECU.

He got an ECU Code P1555 which said "unknown" on his read out and 2woody claims his "Snap On" scan reads the same and says "Service Interval"

The Autobox ECU said P0727 "Can receives error not present" and P1781 "Unknown DTC not present"

Bri cleared all of those and I went for a quick spin around the block. The "spanner" icon didnt reappear again until I was just about to return to start point. I put the A/C on and the icon reappeared. (Probably not connected).

Bri then re-read the ECU's and got nowt from the Autobox and just the P1555 code from the main ECU again.

Woody's about to go on holiday and Bri has very kindly offered to check the codes again if required.

Throttle position sensor (TPS). Clean the breather system and remove throttle body and give that a good clean as well.

When i first read the codes p1555 was there and stating tps after clearing and it coming back just said unknown but lets face it the unspoken of code reader does odd stuff like that while i was there had a quick gander at the breather hoses and they all felt newish and clear by that i mean there was no obvious hard blocks did advise him to clean throttle body coz even without taking the plenum of you could see oil residue on the outer. As said before Mike if you need a hand giz a shout

I can't imagine there is ever a good reason for steam cleaning electrical components

P1555 is probably caused by water in the TPS

OK another update. Met with Briy2 today and he cleaned all the gunge out of the throttle body and some pipes feeding to and from (dunno what exactly) and reassembled the whole thing. Took code readings then I drove it around for a while and lo and behold the f******* light came on again just after I'd switched on the A/C.

Briy then re read the codes and noticed one or two anomalies and also noted that the console showed an abnormally high external temperature reading of 44º whereas the correct outside temperature was around about 15.5º. Cutting it very short he replaced the external temperature sensor from my vehicle with his own and job done. No more "spanner in car" light even when A/C is activated
