I need to take a peep at my V6 cam belt timing, whats the easiest way without removing too much stuff??

No easy way, you don't state what engine. But if its one with longer plenum, that has to come off, bag pipes out, aux belt at least...

Cambelt cover is trapped behind aux belt tensioner and cable tray.

You will save time overall if you accept that the bagpipes are coming out (5 minutes work). Once they are out of the way another 5 minutes to remove aux belt, aux belt tensioner, cable tray and cam belt cover.

And once you've done all that, what are you actually going to do?
If the belt is really overdue a change there might be some visible damage. Might.
You might find that the belt tension/timing is wrong, but you will need the timing tools to check.

What I'm trying to say is once you've stripped it as far as the belt, you might as well just change the bloody thing!

It's a 2.6 with the long plenum, reason for inspection is it has a misfire that has not been cured with plugs and coil packs so it has been  suggested it may have slipped a tooth or two. I have a couple of other things to try first but just gauging this for when/if I need to. If it is wonky it will be getting broken up as won't be worth spending more on.

Have you had the breather units off from the top of the plenum?

I have Lizzie, amazing amount of crap came out of the breather system but all back together ok

Are you sure?  I had a misfire after I had done a full service and guess what; it was that silly 'top hat' rubber gasket that I had managed to dislodge / or it had broken up from the connection between the black plastic breather box and the plenum!  Without it the engine was running crap, but once I had replaced with new, it ran soooooo smooth!

Worth a check of all else fails.

PS The outstanding clue to the problem was a loud sssssssssssssss from the top of the engine!
