General Car Chat / Now here's a funny thing...
« on: 20 December 2016, 20:19:14 »
I always try to get my insurance, whatever type, through a cashback site. Having checked on a comparison site for SWMBO'S Jazz insurance, Admiral came up second cheapest to Saga by a fiver, however on Topcashback their cashback was listed as about double, so....armed with the figure from the comparison site, I input the exact same details on Admiral via Topcashback, and, surprise surprise, the figure quoted was almost exactly the the original figure PLUS the expected cashback. ;D It seems they've now cottoned on to us cheapskates, and just hope to suck us in with a large 'cashback' carrot. Glad I did my homework, as Saga, even though a lower cashback rate, still worked out cheaper in the end, as their cashback quote was the same as the comparison site. :y

Omega General Help / Replacing ignition switch
« on: 10 December 2016, 12:47:40 »
As I have an intermittent non-starting fault on the TD, I intend to change the ign switch as a first option. Looking at Haynes, it seems it may be possible to swap this without removing the steering wheel or ign barrel. Has anyone done this who can comment?
Also aftermarket switches are only a few quid, any recommendations for quality AM parts?

Omega General Help / Help wanted
« on: 07 December 2016, 15:06:04 »
Away from home and TD failed to start. Not battery, ignition lights all on, but when key turned to start position nothing happens, no click, lights do not dim. Suspect solenoid failure unless someone has a better suggestion.  :-\

Any idea how to get Facetime to mirror from an iPad Air to my Samsung Smart TV. I've got the mediashare app, but even with my widely known iSkills  ::) ::) ::) and Google, I am unable to see how it can be done. :y

General Car Chat / UV torch
« on: 20 November 2016, 17:00:37 »
I've got one of these having seen an AC guy using one to locate AC fluid leaks, but he had a pair of goggles on. As I can't see the green stuff with the torch or naked eye, does anyone know what sort of goggles are required? :-\ :-\ :-\

General Discussion Area / Battery charging
« on: 04 November 2016, 15:43:31 »
I have one of the Halfords 12v 34AH jump start boxes, and have found it very useful, even though I've only needed it once myself. It has a plug-in type charger, 16w 13.5v 500Ma, and connects to the box with a mini jack plug. As the unit rarely gets used, I have to remember to charge it regularly. Is there any good reason not to leave it permanently on charge ? :-\

Omega General Help / TD warm start
« on: 02 November 2016, 19:19:17 »
TD parked facing uphill after about 5 minutes driving from cold, quarter tank of fuel, battery not 100%, failed to start after several revolutions, didn't flog the battery completely to death, as I know the symptoms. SWMBO delivered the jump start kit, and by now the gloplugs came on, so it sprang straight into life. I know from experience that when the engine is just this warm, it doesn't like to start immediately. Should I be concerned? Ideally, I would have a switch to select the gloplugs at this sort of engine temp. :-\

General Discussion Area / More iPhone woes
« on: 06 October 2016, 20:13:29 »
My iPhone 5s has recently updated itself, which is annoying anyway, as when I switch on, instead of the login screen other rubbish appears, which takes me some time to work out how to remove it. So I thought I would uninstall the update, and carefully followed instructions gleaned from the support site, only to find that, having backed it up as required, I have now locked the update in, and the backup is of the updated phone.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
Bugger bugger bugger. Oh well, I will just have to live with it.
Next, the first time I took a picture with the updated phone and plugged it into the PC to add it to a folder, nothing happened. Prior to the update, I was offered a menu to import pictures from the phone, now, nothing, no indication on the PC that it is even connected!
I f...ing hate Apple products, they always think they know better than you. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Turns out you have to switch off AV programmes before it will recognise the phone.  :y

General Discussion Area / 40-43" Smart TV
« on: 05 October 2016, 19:17:01 »
I'm planning to put a TV on a wall mount in my conservatory, which is used for about 8 months of the year, and occasionally for dinner parties in winter, but I'm concerned that it may suffer from condensation on metal parts during winter months. There is not permanent heating in there, as I'm too mean to put the CH on.
Any thoughts?
