Corona virus Europe
« on: 24 February 2020, 11:03:47 »

Anyone still thinking it is all going to pass over and nothing to worry about?

I wonder how many folks foreign holiday trips will be hit come this summer.

Still think I'm more likely to get hit by a bus/die on the road/etc, yes.

My company has just cancelled a lot of international travel, which is bloody annoying seeing as I'd spent £450 of my own, non-refundable, money to book a flight for my OH to join me in Seattle.

Either:
a) We are all going to be dead/zombies/living in a post apocalyptic wasteland by the end of the year or
b) This will all blow over in a couple of months and we'll move on to the next media-induced-panic

Either way, what's the point in changing our plans? ::)

There are some questions that are not being covered on this. The one I am interested in is:
Let's assume that the virus spreads among the population, as seems most likely. Once you have had the infection, which seems to be relatively mild for most people (less dangerous than influenza, by all accounts), is that it? Are you now immune or will the virus mutate year by year so that you can catch a different strain every year?

Good question. There was an expert on Sky News earlier that made some good points. He might have known

The EU have devised contingencies and set aside 200 million for measures. Italy now has some communities in lockdown.

I am thinking better quarantine ( isolation if you like) will help. How can four Brits passed as OK now have the virus for example?

Get your masks and alcohol based hand cleanser now.  Gloves might be an idea too.Might be some money to be made on shares too as markets tumble.

On the one o'clock news now: Stock markets across Europe have taken fright and dropped by more than 3%. Lots more cases in Iran than the authorities are letting on.

And, breaking news in Russia: It was Donald wot did it.  ;D

For those who insist on worrying about things you can't change, you can track how screwed you are here: https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6

Interesting word “ worrying”. Risk assessment or common sense?

It most certainly is regrettable that you have lost money on your travel plans for example. Is plane travel a great idea?

Anyone know how the nice couple on the cruise ship are faring. They had an outside cabin so could get fresh air. Mrs V thinks they both have pneumonia with his being the worst.

Seems less risky than using the roads, given how many people are killed each year driving.

And another thing. Figures are being released about the number of cases in any given country but, according to those in the know, most people only suffer mild, respiratory symptoms. If you got 'a bit of a bad chest', would you 1) Present at A&E, 2) Go to your GP or 3) Get on with it?
I would imagine most people would answer 3 but, apparently, these people can still spread the virus. So, is the actual figure 3,5 or even 10 times what we are being told?

I dunno about Corona virus Europe, what about Africa?  ???

It could be utterly devastating if it takes hold in rural areas of countries like Uganda, Zambia, Malawi or Mozambique where there is little or no healthcare.  :-\

Or the slums of the big cities like Nairobi or Jo'burg.  :(

it's a pathetic weapon that is hard to catch, gives most victims the sniffles for a few days, and has a mortality rate of only 2% in the worst area affected. You would want something a lot more effective if using a bio-weapon.
