Towbar wiring
« on: 22 September 2007, 17:08:42 »

I want to break into the rear light cluster wiring to supply my single towbar electrics. Does anyone know what wire colours feed what lamps? Thanks

You should be able to find the info on the site somewhere. I'll look when I get home from work.
If you remove the trim in the back of the boot, you find a square grey plug with a black/blue wire looped in it which is where the Vauxhall towbar wiring loom would just plug in. There's also a permanant live supply for your caravan on the smae connector (when you put the appropiate fuse in the main fuse box)

If you've got a Haynes manual the colours should be listed on the wiring diagram. This is how I worked it out. Not got mine to hand but that should help.

I used the cables from the towing connector rather than trying to wire them to the light clusters however there is a brake light failure sensor socket that you have to bridge to use the brake light feed here. Plenty of information on this in this section if you do a search.

Not sure what wires you need colours for... is it the car loom or is it the wiring harness for the towbar.

Towbar cable colours are usually as follows...

Blue ------- Rear Fog Supply
Green ----- RH Flasher
White ------ Earth
Black ------ LH Side Lights
Yellow ----- LH Flasher
Brown ----- RH Side Lights
Red -------- Stop Lights
Purple ----- Rear Fog Lamps

As Markyp suggests, it is usually better to find the pre-wired connector behind the trim in the boot. Different adapters are available for different harnesses. If it is a Vx towbar kit you are fitting the adapter you require is part number 91149320.

For reference (I can feel a towbar wiring HOWTO coming on at this rate):

Colours on vehicle harness:

Black / Blue : Fog Light
Black / White : Turn signal, Left
Red : +12v permanent
Grey / Black : Tail Lamp Left
Black / Yellow : Stop Lamp
Grey / Red : Tail Lamp Right
Black / Green : Turn signal, Right
Brown : Chassis / Negative
White / Black : Reversing Lamp

These are true at the towing connector X25 and, as far as I can see, also at the light clusters on the car depending on from where you want to pick the signals up.

Note the brake light signal at X25 requires the bulb failure sensor to either be fitted or the socket thereof bridged using a short section of wire and 2 male spade connectors.

There will be 2 black and blue cables to the X25 connector. The one to pin 11 is the feed from the fog light switch. The one on pin 10 is the feed to the fog lights on the car. There wires are normally bridged together by contacts in X25 itself. When the connector is coupled this is broken and the connection is made in the towing socket. This connection is broken when a trailer is coupled up, disabling the fog lights on the vehicle. The feed to the trailer fog lights must come from pin 11. Pin 10 goes to the switch contact on the towing connector.
