Sometimes I wonder about the competence of so called mechanics these days.

I owned my first 2.0 Omega estate for 6 years before I stumbled upon OOF and managed to sort all the usual problems such as cam sensor and wishbones etc. on my own as I have worked on cars all my driving life.  I must say though that all the amazing maintenance guides on this site have helped me considerably since, especially repairing my drivers door solenoid switch recently and the help available here is second to none, long may it last!

I bought a Sealy VS8700 some years ago for £50, it's been excellent on both my car and my daughter's Golf.  I expect you can much better ones now for less money than I paid.

What wonderful pictures, love all the fabulous old estate cars, especially the Ford Mark 2 and Mark 3 models.

I have always found wiping the screen and wiper blades with neat Vauxhall Opticlean very effective coupled with Opticlean in the washer bottle mixed with filtered tap water (our water is very hard).

Years ago I had a 1950 MG Y Type which had a Jackall built in hydraulic jacking system which still worked.  All you had to do was select either front, rear or all jacks and then operate a small pump under the bonnet and the car would lift about six inches off the road, pity cars do not have this system now.  I think Ford Pilots of the same era had them as well.

I ride a bike to work most days (4 miles odd each way) and have done so for the last 30 years.  I have never worn lycra or a helmet, my bike is an old cruiser type with cow-horn handlebars and I have to say that virtually all the motorists I see are generally careful and considerate.  As I have driven numerous cars all my life I ride fast but carefully being aware of the problems that some cyclists can cause if not fully aware of their surroundings.

Like Rods2 I also hate cold weather, can't wait until next week when we are off to The Gambia for a bit of lovely African heat and friendly hospitality!

Bloke I used to work with made one, he could never manage it and when he bought it into work I tried it but just could not get the balance right.  Many people at the firm tried it during the following weeks and none were successfull.

Labour run councils, what an abhorrence, they should all be destroyed.

General Car Chat / Re: How Many Cars....

Been driving 46 years, first 2 years with motorbikes and then on to cars.  Far too many to remember, but many of the earlier ones were bought for £15 on average to give some idea of the total wrecks I drove, especially as a student.

Coke is good for cleaning rusty metal and copper coins but I would never drink the stuff !
