Omega General Help / Re: Looking to buy a Omega

The 2.2 is not as powerful as the V6 models but my 2.2 auto estate has served me well for the last 6 years lugging heavy loads and driven reasonably hard.

Yes, it is a standard tyre valve which is approximately 50p.  I have just replaced this valve on my car and now the aircon is working fine again.

Not only are most new cars ugly but they are also fatties compared to older models.  The name Juke for that Nissan monstrosity offends me as it is too close to jukebox and the ones I have are totally gorgeous.

Omega General Help / Re: Water "Adams ale"

I live in a very hard water area and have always used a water filter.  The kettle never furs up and so far my washers are clear so hopefully the radiator is also clear.  Only problem is the cost of the filters which are Brita.

Omega General Help / Re: Passenger door locked

I suspect that the main function of the plastic cover is to prevent the use of a hook to open the door and possibly try and keep water from dripping on the mechanism.

Omega General Help / Re: Passenger door locked
« on: 03 September 2013, 21:59:29 »
After an hours struggle I have just managed to get the door open with no damage to anything apart from the brown plastic cover on the lock itself.
All I used was a metre length of 2.4mm diameter 314 stainless steel weld rod (1.6mm dia. is too weak and 3.0mm dia. is too thick to slide around easily) with an 8mm hook bent on the end and a small single LED bulb to illuminate the inside of the door.  With the door glass fully lowered and the LED bulb wedged behind the glass I was able to side the weld rod between the glass and door trim at angle of 45 degrees approximately to first pull off the brown plastic cover which took several sharp tugs to first break off and then finally flip to the bottom of the door to expose the top of the solenoid.  It helps to have a spare door catch assembly so that you can see how it works and the relative position of the locking quadrant relative to the solenoid as you cannot see the quadrant itself.  With a bit of fiddling and several false starts I finally snagged the quadrant, jerked the rod upwards and the door snapped open!  What joy, I even did a victory circuit of the garage.  The solenoid is jammed down at its lowest position so I am not sure how to dismantle it but no matter as I have a spare to fit tomorrow evening.
If anyone thinks this is useful I could place a quick guide to save anyone smashing up a perfectly good door trim panel.

Omega General Help / Passenger door locked
« on: 03 September 2013, 12:49:53 »
I'm not sure if this is in the correct section but my front passenger door has just locked solid.  It has been playing up for a while and I have been putting of repairing it now it suddenly refuses to open no matter what I try.  After looking at previous posts it appears that you have virtually wreck the door card to get access to the lock mechanism in order to open it.
Is it possible to open it from outside using a "Slim Jim" type tool?  I have access to a workshop so I cam make up various hook type tools from stainless wire or hardened steel strip.  Just wondered if this would work or would I just be wasting my time?  Any help would be much appreciated, if the tool does work I could put a guide on.

Omega General Help / Aircon leak
« on: 19 August 2013, 22:41:41 »
The aircon stopped working on my car 2 weeks ago (never been topped up to my knowledge since new).  The gas was replaced and a dye added to check for leaks because the system was totally empty.  It has just stopped working again and the only leak I can see is around the top connection, which I presume is the low pressure one, which is soaked in the green dye.   Is it possible to replace this valve as it appears to be the same type of valve as fitted to the tyres?  The specialist I used seems to think the whole pipe assembly has to be changed which could prove expensive,

My estate was registered in May 2004 and I overtook an identical silver one with a very similar registration to mine on the A12 near Chelmsford last year so there are a few around.  In fact the one I overtook may be the same one that Albitz saw.

General Car Chat / Re: best vauxhall you ever owned

I loved my 1957 Victor Super bought for £15 when I was a student in Pompey.  Just like a miniature Chevy with chrome everywhere, even on the dashboard.  Totally reliable and virtually no rust (most unusual).  With a bench front seat, column gear change and handbrake lever under the dash it was a useful passion wagon too.  Unfortunately a wayward Westminster wrote it off in Southsea one wet night so it was replaced with a 1961 Consul 375 which also cost £15 those where the days!

Omega General Help / Re: Intermittent ABS light
« on: 06 July 2013, 22:29:25 »
I had exactly the same intermittent ABS light problem on my old 2.0 estate.  Someone suggested replacing the brake light switch which I did (what an awkward contortionist job it was) and the ABS light never came on again so could be worth trying.

My wife's 1.8 petrol Vectra estate did the same thing about 5 years ago.  I replaced the cam sensor and it has been fine ever since.

Having suffered with back pain for many years, I finally tried acupuncture about 2 years ago and I have to say the result was amazing.  The pain relief was virtually instantaneous and after regular sessions I am almost as flexible as I was 40 years ago.
