General Car Chat / Car Mechanics on GM Automatic Gearboxes
« on: 26 March 2013, 21:35:01 »
In the latest issue of Car Mechanics there is an article on Automatic Gearboxes.  They state that the 4 speed GM gearbox (4L30E) is a good unit but they recommend if you own a BMW or a Vauxhall with a GM box you should really replace the torque converter lock-up clutch solenoid as soon as possible as they are prone to failure.  They also mention  that a filter and oil change is a good idea on lower mileage units.

I changed the oil and filters on my auotobox when I bought the car at 89,000 miles, as recommended here and it is still as sweet as a nut at 115,000 miles.

I have seen no mention of converter solenoid failure on my rather infrequent visits to this excellent forum, has anyone here experienced problems with this and is it easy to replace if necessary?

I am really saddened to see how rapidly our once great country is being run into the ground by useless inept politicians!  What on earth are we leaving for our children and grandchildren?

I love curries, especially Vindaloo, going with Phal is really at the top end and some restaurants serve this as liquid fire!  However as I get older I usually stay with the relatively mild Ceylon or Madras for the flavour.  There is such a fabulous range of dishes and heat levels that you can never get bored with them, sod it now I am feeling hungry.

General Car Chat / Re: Tyres suitable for omega
« on: 14 March 2013, 21:06:10 »
I totally agree with ffgary1 about the Michelin Pilot Primacy tyres as I have them on my car also finding them quiet and sure footed with no tramlining plus they appear to be wearing very well after approximately 12,000 miles.  My pressures are 30 p.s.i. Front and 33 p.s.i. Rear.

I agree with Lizzie, The Salvation Army will always get donations from me, an excellent charity.

I bought a 1998 1.8 petrol Vectra estate after I wrote my first Omega off 6 years ago for £1000 with 75,000 miles and fsh etc.  After I bought my current Omega I gave it to my wife who is still using it, now with 115,000 miles approx.  It has never given any trouble, just the normal tyre wear of WWD plus the body and interior are still in excellent condition.  I reckon that they are very underrated cars but not as comforable or spacious as the Omega.

What a bunch of bungling front botties they are making these stupid decisions, thank goodness I have just managed to buy a generator before the lights start to go out!  Seems to me that the only use for politicians is for fuel in Drax instead of woodchips.

I have a Sealey VS8700 that will read all the engine codes and erase them plus it has freeze frame data etc.  It is now very basic and there are many similar types for £50 or less now.

Car Mechanics have been running an project Laguna 1.9 dCi Sport Tourer for a while now, might be worth a look if you are interested in one.  They are normally a bit wary of French cars but they appear to warmed to this one.
