2.5 TD cam belt or chain?

As above really. Is the 2.5 td lump chain or belt driven?

Like all chains they stretch, whats critical with oil burners is oil changes. Every 3k is recommended.  :y

Ours gets done religiously every 2.5k miles, and it was similarly treated since new. I'm only it's second owner, and got it at 89k.
Touch wood, she's still running beautifully at nearly 110k. :y

What I understand is with diesel, it not only lubricates, but also removes soot particles. It can only hold so much before it becomes "grit" like, and actually causes damage.

I always just looked at oil, it was Omegatoy who taught me to actually rub the oil between thumb and finger, to see how corse it is :)

Question stems from my post yesterday. Turns out that the seller apparently took the car out smorning and the 'cam' broke. Sounds like an excuse to me....

Killed a work transit a few years ago that had been left a bit too long between services. Oil was like rubbing compound...dry, black, greasy paste.

This is why you should never use diesel oil in a petrol engine the oil has a detergent for carbon removal

The chains do stretch over time, moreso if the servicing has been poor (BMW state 4.5k miles service interval, 3k is about right, and 'annually' (eg, 12k+) is guaranteed to harm this engine).

The chain guides tend to snap as they go brittle with age.
