head gasket?
« on: 13 January 2010, 22:19:52 »

hi can anyone please help
i have a 53 plate 3.2 v6 omega and have noticed i have pressure in the coolant system, and loss of coolant.
my first guess is the head gasket gone but i have no loss of power, no sludge in the oil or coolant and no white smoke.
are there any other faults that could cause this.
all comments are very welcome
thankyou bob

may have an air lock, only other way to find a leaking head is pressure test the pistons.

ok couple of easy things first before all this piston testing stuff....

After a run, take off the expansion cap and sniff, does it smell of petrol?

Any excessive white smoke out of the exhaust?

Check the HBV (heater by-pass valve) passenger side, rear of the block, it shunts water to the heater matrix / engine block, this is a common failure. Check that for leaks.

My rusty translator suggests he means compression test the cylinders

Thanks Tunnie, never heard of pressure testing pistons!!  Cylinder compression test may not pick up dodgy head gasket if coolant leak external to cylinders though!!  Would have thought it more sensible to pressure test cooling system  ;)
