Washing machine. Hotpoint WMA60.
Its 14yrs old, and bearings have gone again by the sound of it. Trouble is, it could be one of 2 sizes, so would mean stripping, ordering the bits, then reassembling, so probably out of action for a week (I think this was the reason last time I bought the entire drum assembly).
Or accept its probably done its time, and she can have a nice new shiny one.

Do tips take household appliances?
A bit of rust on the WMA60, so fairly worthless. Progammer/logic board/display might be worth a few quid, but suspect rest is worthless.

I'm not a big fan of Hotpoint. Probably a good brand in the 70s, as I recall my mum have no reall issues with washer and dishwasher that weren't due to 5 kids pissing around :o
However, looking around my kitchen, I have a Hotpoint washer, Hotpoint dishwasher, Hotpoint fridge freezer, Creda cooker ;D
Hmmm, should it be another Hotpoint then!

I did, but noticed (when looking at Hotpoint), every single one is a unique to AO model. That may cause me problems later on when I need bits.

Check the wiring before you even consider a repair. Mine was worse than an eighties VAG, insulation crumbled off the copper.
+1 for ao.com I ordered a Samsung washer and the second one was great, 1st had door sensor issues.

Our recent-ish washer came from Costco. It's a Maytag & IIRC was around £500
I dropped my old washer off at a local repairer/parts supplier for spares.
don't foregt to remove the transportation screws from the back of your new washer ...... it'll dance around your kitchen if you don't .............. aparently :-[ :-[

Most of the common names, Hotpoint,creda,indiset,aeg, etc are all made in the same factory, and rebadge.
Our dishwasher,fridge,washing machine have all come from Argos, any problems it goes back and we get a new one, and cant fault the service from them, p and there's always a special offer on something :y
Our new washing machine is a 8kg 1400 spin, cost £220 quid, o and its a bush,Hotpoint,creda, etc.

The only person I know that bought one from Costco got a refund after the 3rd one developed a fault. I'll ask what brand it was, but I think Costco only really do Maytag

bought our first home together and spent wedding vouchers on a beko washer £160 and beko fridge freezer £159 iirc it was 2004 and I replaced the washer last year and the fridge this year and only replaced fridge cos we needed a bigger one,i personally buy the cheapest in a lot of cases and if I get a few years out of it its earned its keep so buy another without getting my hands dirty

You'll save the purchase price of a new Machine in the 5 years it's likely to last in electricity and water alone.
Not only that, but a 'quick' wash is now 15minutes - and it does the job unless you have heavily soiled clothes.... time saving, also!

I think the old one is A++ rated, most new ones are obviously A+++. So probably not much in it energy/water wise.
The one doubt she has about new ones is the long cycles. Her favourite 40C cotton wash is 100m on ours, most modern ones appear to be near 200m for similar wash.

10 or 15yrs ago, I would have agreed. The newer ones seem to be more problematic it would appear.

I think that newer white goods, (well any manufactured items) are not made to last more than 5-7 years. If your machine is still ok, apart from the current problem, you might be better off fixing it. :-\

Modern machines wash stone cold to chase energy ratings and have to extend wash times to compensate.
In addition, they don't get hot enough to kill bacteria so you end up with a load of manky stuff building up in them.
Fix the old one. :y

OK, replacement it is, as the spider is badly corroded where the seal runs and the bearing holders are stuck fast to the bearings and have come out of the rear drum half. So a new drum assembly is required which is £160 (cheapest, and not in stock) - £200 (in stock).
Additionally it now needs a new dispenser, which broke when I was drilling out the rusted screws :(, can't find one online, but suspect its the wrong side of £70.
It'll be whatever currys have in stock for collection today then ;D

Found some of the wiring was badly chaffed - wonder if that was causing that problem where it intermittently wouldn't finish a cycle a couple of years back?

Is that why Shitepoint (I think) were advertising a steam function on their shite, to kill bacteria?
As to cold fill only, I recall Mr DTM stating it was mostly pointless having a hot fill on a modern machine, as it doesn't use enough hot water to get hot from cylinder upstairs in airing cupboard down to machine in utility, so ends up heating it anyway as at best it only gets warm...

Yep, hot fill is a hiding to nothing, as said. The detergents benefit from being heated from cold in the machine anyway, and you need to draw off gallons of water in our house before it gets hot.
Just give it a hot wash every so often, and beware that washes are often colder than advertised in the program these days, again, to chase a good rating. ::)
I worked on a relatives fairly new machine recently. It was full of grey, very smelly cottage cheese like stuff. :o Almost as if it doesn't even get hot enough to dissolve the powder!
Our 16 year old Zanussi, which gets frequent 60C washes, was clean inside when it got its' umpteenth set of bearings last year.
Does sound like yours may be too far gone to bother with.

Cold fill only is due to EU tree huggers who made the ratings regulations so manufacturers couldn't 'cheat' with hot water fill. :-[
A common complaint, especially in warmer European countries is that they are more expensive to run for people that have a roof solar heater that provides hot water for nothing. :(
That what happens when the eco green tree hugging lunatics have taken over the asylum and set the rules. :(

Best way to pre-vent the grey smelly gunge is
1 use a liquid detergent,direct in the drum
2 regular service washes' 90'c pour bottle of white vinegar down all 3 draw slots,then let it get on with it.
3 as said 60'c washes for killing bacteria.
4 don't use powder.
5 limescale tablets,
My machine was 15 years old, using the above plan, Mrs Bg killed it in 12mths, when she moved in,
But I haven't just typed that :o

For what it's worth, I have a Samsung and it's been great. It even has a Smartphone App to diagnose faults. :o
Also, it has quick 60min daily wash, which is fine for most items. :y

Found a machine Mrs TB gave the OK to at Currys in MK. Ordered it, but picked delivery instead of collection, what a 1st class idiot. Still, it'll be here later today.

Does sound like yours may be too far gone to bother with.
It lost a fight with a plasma cutter. Its amazing how small a washing machine is when cut to bits (bar the blocks and the spider (too big for my cutter)) ;D
