Cam cover gaskets - problems!!
« on: 20 December 2011, 19:09:43 »

Now I am not a novice when it comes to engine building or working on cars, I rebuild classic race cars for a living!
But, I am doing the cam covers gaskets after an engine fire at the weekend.

I am having a hell of a job to get everything out of the way to get passenger side cover back on. I have got the wire tray out, but can I get the wires out of the way? I am even thinking of disconencting the AC pipe!!!

I am sure you guys that have done this loads of times will have a little tweak?

Thanks

Colin

A bungie strap works well, but personally I make Mrs TheBoy get her hands dirty ;D

Use genuine GM gaskets for this specific job (as much as it pains me to say that), else its likely you'll be doing it again very soon :(

Once all the wires are out of the tray, and the tray is on the floor, tie the bundle of wires back and up .. I use a piece of cord and tie to the bonnet strut, seems to move the wires in the "best" direction ... It is still a fiddly job but easier .. just ensure you don't knock the gasket out of alignement on one of the camshaft bolt heads .. easy to do, hard to spot but it leaks like **** first time you start it ... whole side has to be redone ...although doing it the second time in 2 days does make it a tad faster .. :)

Entwood, I am not doing it twice!!! Tried the bungy straps to the bonnet strut.

Do I need to disconnect any more of the wiring?

The boy, genuine parts, and I dont have a missus nilocp! Any other ( brilliant) suggestions????

Appreciate the thought Pete. I have managed to get it on today, but what really pisses me off, is that I cannot confirm that the half moons have located correctly. I have tried mirrors, fingers etc, and it seems OK. We will know when I fire it up.

I am glad I am not doing this sort of job for a customer. Bloody nightmare!!!

I feel sorry for 'gareth' taking this on!!!

Well, touch wood, no leaks.

But engine management light on. I didnt disconnect the battery, so error on every sensor that was unplugged!!

Now reset.

Just temperature gauge problem so the damn inlet manifold will have to come off again.

I can see why these cars are so popular now. But only with those people that like working on them, not using them! :y :y

Worst bit is getting the old sealant off and cleaning the surfaces IMO.

There is some feel and faith involved that things line up, but I leave the cable tray on, just tie it up, slide the cover along under the cable tray, line the edge up and down.
Provided the gasket doesn't touch any thing it will be fine. If it does, remove, double check it's seated correctly and try again.

Oh, and count the old o rings out all present and correct. Don't want to leave any in there. :)

I find the cam cover gaskets a pretty straight forward job to be honest.

As for the ECU light, that will only come on if a fault exists and not if one has occured in the past so keep an eye on it.
