As it turned out the A5 wasn't nearly as far out of the way as I had expected - because the A43 was shut north of Brackley (for resurfacing?)
Ah shit, my bad.

Not sure why, it might be they are starting to break the barriers in order to make the A43 around Silverstone a 4 lane 1 way system for the upcoming boredom event.
