For once... happy ending.

The week after the WS replacement, I went back to the workshop with my printed EPC pages showing windshields and sensors. After a brief discussion, we agreed that they were going to try to find a proper windshield.

They said they were going to do it but they didn't actually do it, because three weeks or so later they appointed me the next day to replace the sensor. I immediately phoned my insurance agent and told him that I wanted a proper WS for my car whenever possible. After that, I went to the workshop at the time of the appointment and they showed me that they had ordered the WS that very same morning and not three weeks before as we agreed.

Last week they called me saying that they finally had the windshield. Today was the appointment for the new WS replacement.

They have taken a couple of hours to replace the WS. It is Saint-Gobain branded and must have been for the RHD market, because the glass info is on the right side and not on the left side. Still in the workshop, immediately after I placed the switch on the auto position, the rain sensor has worked flawlessly (as it used to do), going faster and slower as water was sprayed over the WS.

The guy that replaced the WS said that he was very surprised and that he had never in his long career saw such thing as a sensor paired with a WS. He said also that it hasn't been easy to source. There has been no need of recalibrating nor connecting through ODB. It has just worked when it has been paired with the proper WS.

I haven't been able to attach the pic of the proper "heat reflecting" WS's printing to this post so I uploaded it at https://imgur.com/a/1IpzcsJ.

For the record, the printing says

Code: [Select]
SAINT-GOBAIN SEKURIT
DOT 503 AS 1 M 205
43R - 00388
TRANSP. 75% MIN

And has "1021" on the top right side of the printing. Below it, it has a QR code. On the right, there is also "E17" in a circle. On the left there is a fun icon, probably related to temperature.

The "R" in "43R" probably means it is meant for a RHD car I guess

Thanks everyone who took interest in my issue and posted to help.

This morning I have asked at Opel for the availability of part nr. 161077 and, as expected, it is out of catalog. This afternoon I'm going to ask for third party parts. Let's hope there are some around. That online EPC list a couple of Pilkington references for it as "analogs".

Windscreen fitter should have checked and recalibrated the rain sensor. I would take it back and ask them to put it right.

I already did it. They have no Tech II but a generic tool which didn't list any sensor or car body errors. I saw it myself. Maybe Tech II would be able to catch it or maybe the sensor doesn't throw any error at all, but these mutibrand workshops are what they are and have just generic resources. I left with the agreement that they were going to order a new sensor. I didn't know back then that the issue was the windscreen and not the sensor.

Besides, I think that the sensors are what they are and cannot be recalibrated, but who knows... Lesson learned: whenever possible, go to official workshop.

In a couple of hours I'm going back there with all the relevant EPC stuff printed. If the part is available, I think they'll bring it and install it. Let's see...

It's not unusual for the fitters to lose the transparent spacer pad between the sensor and the screen, this affects the sensors view and can cause issues.  :-\

That pad is GM part nr. 95599252? Pic of the part:

Also, I tried switch on ''auto'' position with disconnected sensor, and then nothing happened ( wipers didn't move at all), so my guess is that sensor is ok, but it doesn't work with replacement windshield imported from who knows where...
I don't believe GM made different sensors for uv/non uv windshield so maybe Tech 2 could help...

Good to know. That means that my sensor is unharmed and working after windshield replacement.

As for the sensors, it seems that they made indeed 2 different sensors for HR and non HR windscreens.

BTW, online EPC page for the windscreens: https://webautocats.com/epc/opel/v94/b8/1/

According to this online EPC, there are 5 different GM part numbers for Omega windshields, 3 non compatible with rain sensor fitted vehicles and 2 compatible.

Non compatible are described as "laminated, clear", "laminated, tinted" and "laminated, heat reflective".

Compatible are labeled

  • "laminated, heat reflective (for rain sensor) (ident nq)", part nr. 161077, GM part nr. 24433002
and
  • "laminated (ident np) (for rain sensor) (exc. heat reflective windscreen)", part nr. 161078, GM part nr. 24433003

Those two sensor compatible windscreens are compatible with 2 different rain sensors, whose difference is compatibility with heat reflective windscreens:

  • "Windscreen rain sensor (ident jg) (exc. heat reflective windscreen) (production no. 24402747)", part nr. 6238201 and GM part nr. 93170202
and
  • "Windscreen rain sensor (ident ua) (for heat reflective windscreen) (production no. 24456424)", part nr. 6238211 and GM part nr. 93171184.

That online EPC is everything I can check right now. Just to be sure, I'll be very grateful if anyone with a working EPC can check which windshield and sensors match my car's VIN.

So it seems that they have fitted the wrong windshield in my car. According to the information above, I'll get back my rain sensor either by changing the windshield for a heat reflective one or by changing the sensor for a non heat reflective one.

What should I pick? Is "heat reflective" (which I understand as UV filtering) so much better than non heat reflective?

EDIT: My VIN at that page says that it has "A23 Windscreen, heat reflective" windshield. Can anyone confirm with a proper offline EPC. PM me VIN please.

So I either get a "heat reflecting" UV filtering windshield or lose the sensor.

Aren't "Solar tint" sensors available? What about setting the sensibility of the sensor via Tech II as suggested in the third message?

The insurance is theoretically paying everything, so installing a new proper "heat reflecting" windshield should be no issue. The problem might be sourcing it.

7
So the new screen has a Purple tint to it?

I believe if the old one didn't you need to get someone with a Tech II to change the coding for the Rain Sensitive Wipers for a Solar tint screen

It is rather greenish than purple. Very close to the tint of the windows.

I have no Tech II, but I do have an "My Naff Code Reader" unit. Will it do it?

Hello.

A couple of weeks ago I was driving on the motorway a heard a loud 'POP' sound. A few minutes later there was a small crack on the windshield. At the end of the trip it was thrice the size, so the windshield had to be replaced.

Through my insurance I contacted with a Carglass workshop. Carglass is Berlon's brand in my country, equal to Autoglass in the UK. After a week or so they contacted me to say that the glass was ready and yesterday I brought them the car.

They installed a glass from the brand Fuyao. I haven't complained because I understand that an Omega windshield might be hard to source in 2023.

The glass is perfectly ok but the rain sensor is not working. When I set the switch in the automatic position (marked "--" in the switch) it makes 2 sweeps and then it makes another 2 sweeps every 5 second or so. The 2 sweeps pattern keeps on forever regardless of the presence of water, so it seems that either the sensor is not working or the car has decided to ignore it for some reason. It has always worked flawlessly, and it was working couple of days ago, so I'm positive that the problem came with the windshield replacement.

Today I brought the car back to the workshop and they haven't been able to make it work. The have removed and reconnected the sensor, removed the battery, the fuse controlling the wipers a a few things more. There were no sensor related errors registered.

They are going to order a new sensor, but maybe the issue is not the sensor but the glass of some other glitch. I'm thinking the problem is the glass itself, which seems a bit darker than the old one (and says "Solar tint", which the old didn't).

Anyone had any experiences with windshield replacements and rain sensors. Is there anything special to do after windshield replacement in order to get it working again?

Best regards.

Hello.

Recently the alternator on my Omega died. Once it was out of the worshop, the sunroof didn't work when I turned the knob which opens and lifts it. This something I expect when I have battery-relaed issues and it is fixed by pressing the control knob for a few seconds. So I pressed it in order to reset it, as I did many other times.

This time, the plastic inside the knob broke and I ended up with the whole knob in my hand. Apparently, there were very few Omegas with electric sunroof sold in my country, so it is very difficult to find the piece in scrapyards.

I tried to post in the trading section of OOF, but apparently I haven't earned the right to do it, so I'm writing here. Maybe someone can sell one to me or point me to any other piece I can use to replace it.

I've searched for the GM part number printed in the piece (90563246) and I've found only references to Omega, but maybe the same knob was used in other Opel, Vauxhall or other GM cars and I can broaden my search options a bit. Hopefully someone here more knowledgeable than me has some info about it.

These are some pics of the piece:

Good to know. Thank you all.

Is the guide available through archive.org or something like that?

Omega General Help / Blinking gear lights
« on: 25 November 2020, 19:57:41 »
Hi.

My Omega acted weird a few days ago.

I had just started moving after a couple of hours parked and I had to stop at a semaphore.

Then right after stopping all the lights in the gear lever started blinking at the same time and the "there is some malfunction in the car" indicator appeared in the dash.

I just stopped the engine and started it again. No ignition. Tried again and it worked. The dash indicator was gone and the car has worked normally ever since. I did a 200+ km trip after that and haven't touched the car since monday.

I've checked the error with the tool and it said it had registered (in the "Not present" state) the code P0705 "( 8 ) Automatic Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction".

The transmission oil was changed a couple of weeks ago. How much should I worry?

TIA

Still got a power sounder? Lose it.

I seem to remember that these Opels don't have it. I'm not sure, though.

What the title says.

Clock in the car has always been fine, but some days ago I noticed that it was 10 minutes or so off time (actually, girlfriend made me notice it the hard way).

So I set the corrected time and... the car ignores my settings. It keeps saying that now is 10 minutes ago.

This happens regardless of the time auto update setting being ticked or not, and regardless of the time being set with the audio system and engine being on or off. The damn thing keeps ignoring me.

Google didn't had anything relevant on "NCDC 2015 clock". Maybe OOF has something to say about it.

I thought I might update this thread.

This saturday I was going to take my car for a walk and found it completely dead. It wasn't even able to raise de door locks. We checked the car with an amperemeter and it had no comsumption. The battery is apparently wrong and discharged itself completely.

After the new battery was in place, I had to set again the stuff that went misconfigured. Among these things was the clock. I set it up and it has been working right since then. No more unfixable 10 minutes delay. Weird, but I'm happy. One headache less. I forgot to check if the auto update setting is ticked. I'll check and post back.

Besides, the idle battery consumption of the car is funny. We stopped and locked the car (without setting the alarm on). It kept sucking 2 amperes for a good 30 minutes. Then it stepped down progressively to 0.1 amperes during more or less 45 minutes, and finally went to 0 after 15 minutes or so and stayed there until we got tired. What would be the car doing during the first 30 minutes to suck such an insane amount of energy while just standing there? :o I have a Parrot installed, but that doesn't suck 2 amperes. The gadget-filled Omegas can drain a battery with a low charge easily! Walk them often!

Remember that all the cruise control can do when descending is to coast, so if the hill is steep enough it'll overspeed.

What speed are you using it at? Mine is terrible at low speeds -  say below 40 MPH. The cruise and autobox seem to fight each other. At main road / motorway speeds, say above 50MPH, it's rock solid, though.

I would expect the engine ECU to complain if the throttle were sticking mechanically, since it's under closed-loop control. It'd also be evident in normal driving.

Might be worth seeking out the update of you have a Tech 2 close.

I also think the throttle body is fine. Otherwise I would have noticed it in normal driving.

I'm locking the CC at ~60 mph (100 km/h). That's the speed the car can't maintain when going downhill.

The Tech 2 update is very interesting. I'm checking it as soon as I can.
