Expansion tank wanted.
« on: 07 July 2022, 16:22:37 »

Had a game of pin the donut down with the float in the expansion tank, but no luck. So had a look on fleabay, and there are some new ones available in Germany but...£26.00 apiece and £34.00 postage, and  that's a no from me! So has anybody got one kicking around and for sale? it's just that coolant level warning is getting on my wick >:(  TIA :y

Can you bridge or unbridge the sensor wiring (whichever it needs)? I've tried all the usual suspects to no avail... But Amazon have some for £288, which must be a good investment...

To be honest, I only found the problem yesterday and after faffing around with the errant float, I sort  of decided on replacing the tank. So hence the wanted post but without thinking about the fitting of a replacement tank. I'll have to look up the how to in the help section. So not sure about your query....but I'm sure that when I come across the problem...I'll break it! ::) ;)

Just checking....AutoVaux has new OE expansion tanks for £53, but no sensor fitment. So I guess when push comes to shove, then as long as the non sensor tank does its job, there's still the temp gauge to keep an eye on things OR just carry on with the old one and spend the money on Thatchers blood orange and sit in the garden and do nothing  8) :y

Might be worth ringing the dealer, as these only used to be about £25.

Non sensor versions cannot be converted.

Having a working sensor and certainly saved my XJ when it decided to dump all its coolant on the A3 - it was the warning that alerted me to the issue, as being a wet day, I was generating a decent rooster tail behind anyway.

Autovaux are showing the sensor versions (90500223) on their site for £62.66 delivered. Not checked actual availability, but if they can get them, £62 is cheaper than the work involved following any overheating issues...

Thanks for the advice, I think that I looked at Autovaux, and they were showing out of stock at the moment. I might well look for a used one. Although that in itself may only be a short term option, new would really be the way to go. These cars are getting a bit of problem on some parts as the numbers diminish, it's not really a viable option to manufacture for the small market that would need them. :y

Technically, it is GM's parts brand, just like Motorcraft, Mopar and Unipart were from Ford, Chrysler and BL. So some parts will be obviously bought in from specialist manufacturers; bearings, variousgaskets, spark plugs, drive belts, filters, oil etc.

Just to clear up the point on the price, they add UK VAT plus their own delivery charge making the bottom line a bit hefty :o But there's no point in chasing your backside here, for possibly a non existent part, life's to short ;)

Yes, even from the USA! I have sold / bought car parts on Ebay to / from the US (and not using their GSP) a lot heavier than a header tank, with tracked courier prices a lot cheaper than that.
A bit after the boat has sailed now, but the correct header tank with the sensor etc is still shown as in stock and available at Autovaux for the price I quoted previously, although I accept their website isn't always bang up to date.

Thanks for the original Autovaux tip off, but they emailed me just now, saying that they don't stock them anymore. So Rock Auto was the right choice in this case, and I think that if I get stuck again I think they are well worth a shot, bearing in mind that the Catera was a 3.0,and that may help a bit for my 3.0 MV6 for the odd part, but not a lot for my 3.2's. :y

At least you found one and hopefully will now be sorted.
Quite a few parts now are pretty expensive or difficult to source, so sometimes you just have to bite the bullet...!

Should brighten up the engine bay up a bit, which with all nasty pre owned junk that's being punted around on fleabay at stupid prices, there's no comparison. :)
