Ive just been reading about the interest payments on the national debt. Its now just over £2 billion a week !!
Not an in tray I would want to be faced with.
It will no doubt be kicked down the road for future generations to deal with though.

Didn't Brown sell off all the gold to pay off the debt incurred in the Napoleonic war?

I suppose that when the numbers become so large they become almost meaningless. Then deferred debt can be deferred almost indefinitely.

Perhaps the PM a 100 years from now can look into it.

The actual figure means nothing, Albs, debts can be inflated away.
When you take out a mortgage @ £1000 a month, it's a huge part of your income if you're earning £3000 a month. Ten years down the line, when you're earning £5000 a month, it's much less of a worry and, as your earnings go up, the percentage you pay decreases.
