I've been thinking about getting a P3 XC70 and as my V70 is the 2.4ltr D5, I've dismissed the D3's and D4's as comparatively gutless.  ::)

I wonder though...  :-\  There are of course tax and MPG advantages.  :)

D4 seemed to be a reasonable compromise between the D3 1.6 (in Auto form) and the more thirsty D5 2.4. While it's no flying machine it wasn't bought to be that, just comfy and hopefully reliable transport with a bigger boot and more refinement than the Astra. Going to get the Gearbox fluid and filter done - I always like to get that ticked off with any automatic i've bought.

We did look at Passat's as they also meet some of the requirements (to help with mobility) we were looking for - Automatic, electric handbrake, flat base seats / minimal bolsters, but at the age and mileage (over the period we hope to keep the car) I was nervous of reports of lots of DSG gearboxes having costly issues.

There were two engine variants in the D4, 5 cylinder single turbo and 4 cylinder twin turbo, Aisin auto box (as per GM FWD in europe) so pretty bulletproof.

As for the Passat, they always remind me of the Goodness Gracious Me sketch, 'bring me the blandest thing on the menu'

That's the donk.  :)

Just sorting out getting the box serviced which is a little confusing to get the right information as this car is a 'partial facelift' so I think it needs the AW-1 ATF. Servicing instructions also indicate that it needs VIDA and DICE to reset the adaptations and alter the transmission change counter on the TCM. Doing some research it looks like a lot of owners do a few short distance changes to help get the old fluid out of the system.

Bit of pre MOT tinkering with the V70, but it's more about mitigating how badly it's going to fail than getting it to pass.  :-\
